　1993年に出た単行本の文庫化。
　『Children of Men』（1991年）の翻訳。
　P. D. ジェイムズの作品だが、ミステリではない。SFである。まったく子どもが産まれなくなってしまった近未来の世界。人類の滅亡は目前に迫っている。イギリスも「国守」と呼ばれる人物が独裁的な善政をしくようになっている。
　その閉塞感あふれる世界での物語なのである。
　中盤くらいまでは興味深く読めた。重厚感ある文章で、絶望ばかりがひたすら描き出されていく。けっして「楽しい」小説ではないが、読まされるものがあった。
　しかし、この後半のダメっぷりはいったい？　しまったのではないかと思うほどの暴走ぶりだ。そして、結末の薄っぺらさ。これは壮大な皮肉として読むべき本なのか？
　この人はミステリ以外に手を出してはいけない作家だ。
