京都の中京に生まれ育って５０年経ちました。仏像、庭、そして老舗のお店に和風旅館、どれをとっても京都の奥深さを感じます。
ところで、京都は「洋館」も多いのですが、ご存知でした？

この『京都の洋館』という本は、お寺や神社ばかりが京都の魅力ではありませんよ、という本です。
日本で最初に電車を走らせたハイカラ趣味の街でもある京都の至る所に個性をはなっている洋館を知るためのガイドブックでもあります。

四条大橋南西詰めの「東華菜館」は、有名な建築家ヴォーリーズの設計になるものです。また、円山公園のはずれにある「長楽館」は、白亜の洋館で現在も多くの観光客がティルームやレストランでくつろいでいます。
京都の学生達が愛した「フランソア」、「築地」、「ソアレ」、「進々堂」等の喫茶店は、今も昔のまま同じスタイルで京都の人達に愛されています。

京都の「洋館」を辿って、遥か遠い昔に思いを寄せてください。一味も二味も違う京都を発見します。そして「京都通」として、再びこの愛すべき街を訪ねてください。

｢京都」と「洋館」の言葉に胸躍らせて買ったが、写真の小ささ、少なさに脱力した。タイトルに｢洋館｣とあるのだからもっと徹底して見せて欲しかった。こぼれ話のページがあるが、それをタイトルにしたほうがしっくりくる。案内ガイドには良い。

近代のおしゃれな洋館が現代によみがえって、やっぱりおしゃれなカフェやレストランやショップに。
京都というとお寺なんかの古建築に走りがちですが、案外明治以降の近代建築が多いんですね。
たまには洋館を見てもいいんじゃないですか？
