　韓国がまだ、高句麗、新羅、百済という三つの国でなりたっていた時代の、それぞれの国の興亡を描いた、三国遺事、三国史記という本から昔話を集めた本です。
（残念ながら現在絶版、この講談社学術文庫版等で比較的入手しやすい。）
日本でも放映された、ヨン様主演の「大王四神記」の背景になるようなお話が沢山収録されています。

・国の祖となる英雄はみな卵からうまれること。
・中国との戦で、多勢に無勢ながらも見事に戦う名将。
・各所に現れる日本琉球との関係

など、日本の話とは一足違った面白さがあります。 機会があったらご覧になってください。

また、本編ではありませんが、
冒頭のこの本を読む子供への著者からの語りかけと、ラストの小堀圭一氏による発刊に関するエピソード、この二箇所は必読です。
ここから作者の金素雲氏の複雑な心情と、植民地だった朝鮮と日本の複雑な関係を理解するための一助となるのではと思います。

三韓（新羅、百済、高句麗）の始祖の誕生から3国の滅亡までが昔話風に書かれています。
伝説上の話、戦での人間模様、お姫様と貧しい若者の話などが盛り込まれています。

もともと日本の子供向けに書かれたものですが、当時の旧仮名遣いや文語調の文体を生かしたものになっているため、現代では子供が読むというよりも、大人が子供の為にする昔話のネタに良いと思いました。

日本の神話や昔話、西欧のお馴染みのおとぎ話以外に、隣国の歴史に触れる良い一冊だと感じています。
是非解説部分も読むことをお勧め致します。著者がどのような状況でこの本を執筆したのか、執筆当初に使っていた筆名の由来等、日本人が考えるべきことが多いです。
