内容紹介

ニューヨークにある百貨店メイシーは毎年感謝祭の日、34丁目通でクリスマス・パレードを催しており、中でも人気なのはサンタクロースの行進だった。本物のサンタクロースを名乗る長い白ひげを持つ老人クリス・クリングル。彼は酔っぱらってしまったサンタクロースの代役として人事係長ドリス・ウォーカーが雇ったのだった。ドリスの娘スーザンはアパートの隣人の弁護士フレッド・ゲイリーと親しくなりドリスとフレッドとも友達になった。クリス老人は人気をわき立たせたので、百貨店では7階おもちゃ売場の人寄せに立たせて、クリスマス・セールを始めた。クリスは子供のために最善を尽くしたサービスをした。そのサービスは大好評で、他店もそれを見習うようになり、クリスは店主メイシーのおほめに預かった。ドリスは娘のスーザンにもおとぎ話や夢物語を読ませず、サンタ・クロースなんかも嘘だと言い聞かせていた。ところがある日スーザンはフレッドに連れられてメイシーへ行った。クリスのひざに抱かれてひげを引っぱると本物だったのでクリスが言う通りに彼が本当のサンタ・クロースだと信じ始めるが…

こんな楽しい話は大切にしたい。
サンタクロースはいるんだ。
子どもたちは大人たちに教えてもらった。サンタさんにお願いしたら、靴下や枕元に朝起きたら望みのものがあるのだ。
ぼくも、子ども時代サンタさんから贈り物をもらった。近所のお菓子屋さんの紙袋に入っていたけれど。
嬉しくて、「サンタクロースからのプレゼントだ！」と会う人ごとに知らせた。
大人たちは笑顔でぼくの報告を聞いてくれた。
「良かったなぁ。ぼく」
いつからか　サンタさんからのプレゼントはなくなった。
「大きくなったらプレゼントはこないのよ」
ぼくも大きくなったのだ。
母子家庭で母は仕事が終わってからそっと近所の菓子屋でプレゼントを買ってくれたのだ。
貧しい母とその愛をぼくは忘れはしない。
サンタさんはいたのだ。

クリスマス映画として今なお高い人気を誇る名作。
「本物のサンタ」を自称する老人と、サンタを信じない現代的な親子の交流を描いた物語。

ハートフルでありながら、鋭い社会風刺を含んだユーモアを見せる。
見どころは、主人公のいかにもサンタらしい風貌と演技、そしてやはり
法廷でのクライマックスは大感動！
ミステリアスでファンタジックな締めも面白い。
