1964年ストックホルムにて、モニカ・セッテルンドとビル･エヴァンスの素晴らしき邂逅。

ジャズ･ボーカルの名盤中の名盤であるわけですが、結構名盤と言われるものの中にも、ポピュラーミュージックやオールディーズのような雰囲気が強い作品も多い中、この作品については、バックのエヴァンス･トリオのリリカルな演奏とかなり抑え気味に歌うモニカの歌唱で、まさしくジャズ･ボーカルの名盤だと言えると思います。実際、モニカは他のアルバムでは、もっと大衆的に歌い上げていたりするんですが、ここではエヴァンスのフィーリングを見事に声で表現しています。選曲もとてもシックな香りのする曲ばかりで、ストックホルムのひんやりした空気が、アルバム全体から漂っているような気分になります。
本作は、初めてジャズ･ボーカルを聴きたいと思っておられる方にも、オススメしたい手堅くて深みもある一枚だと思います。

モニカ・ゼタールンドは、スウェーデンが生んだ国民的ジャズ歌手で、かつ有名な女優です。我々の世代は、モニカ・セッテルンドという名で親しんでいました。

モニカは、1937年9月20日にスウェーデンのハーグフォルスに生まれています。両親も音楽家で、彼女もすでに10代から歌手として歌っており、60年代には来日公演を行っています。
この演奏は1964年の録音で、ビル・エヴァンス･トリオとストックホルムで競演した10曲にボーナス・トラックの6曲が収録されています。

彼女はこの後もワルツ・フォー・デビーを録音していますが、やはりビル・エヴァンスと共演したこの作品にはかないません。抒情あふれるステキな出会いが好結果を残しましたね。

アルバム・タイトルの「ワルツ・フォー・デビー」がやはりいいですね。ビル・エヴァンスのリリシズムは健在で、ささやくようなモニカの歌声が曲に大変マッチしていて、とても良い雰囲気を醸し出しています。

英語ではなくスウェーデン語の歌詞で歌われています。聴きなれない言語ですが「ワルツ・フォー・デビー」との相性も良く、温かい響きを持ったジャズ・ヴォーカルとなっています。いつもは内省的なビル・エヴァンスが、妙に雄弁なのは、「美しい人」を隣に置いたせいでしょうか・・・・・。

　さすがビル・エヴァンス・トリオ、伴奏は言うことないですね。まあ、彼らにしたら平均的なのかもしれませんが。モニカ・ゼタールンドのボーカルも澄んでいて美しいと思います。ジャズボーカルは普通英語なので、スウェーデン語というのも新鮮ですね。選曲もスウェーデンの民謡など、個性があって良いと思います。
　ただ彼女のボーカルは、音域が特に広いわけでもないし、あまり印象には残りにくいでしょうか。これがビル・エヴァンスの伴奏でなかったら、ここまで聴き継がれることはなかったかも知れません。彼女は特にサラ・ヴォーンが好きと言うだけあって、時々若い頃のサラのような歌いまわしも耳にすることができます。
　彼女は2005年に自宅アパートの火災で亡くなったようですね。残念です。
