アーティストについて

1959年、セネガルの首都ダカールに生まれる。幼少より音楽の道を進み、80年代には、ヨーロッパに進出。セネガルの伝統的なリズムとポップスを融合させた、新しいポピュラーなスタイルを確立。そのスタイルは「ンバラ」(Mbalax)と呼ばれている。自身のカルチャーや言語の関係がひとつの問題だと認識し、ネナ・チェリーを迎えたシングル「セブン・セカンズ」を含む作品『ザ・ガイド』を1994年にリリース。この作品の大ヒットで全世界への扉を開いた。その後、ニューヨークのノンサッチ・レーベルに移籍し自身のルーツとポピュラー・ミュージックをより深く融合させたアルバム『ナッシング・イン・ヴェイン』を2001に、『エジプト』を2004にリリースしている。『エジプト』グラミー賞「ベスト・コンテンポラリー・ワールド・ミュージック・アルバム」を授賞している。ニューヨーク・タイムスには「世界で最も偉大なシンガーの一人」と紹介され、タイム誌の選らぶ、「世界の100人」にもリスト・アップされている。

中東を意識した前作と違って、今回は、とてもアフリカ的です。『ナッシングス・イン・ヴェイン』と比べても、「ソー・メニー・メン」などのマイナーなバラードがなく、ゆったりとしていますが、明るい曲が続きます。一気にはじける明るさはありませんが、日常で持続する明るさがあります。
そのぶん、ボーナスディスクには、おそらく統一感を欠くという理由で本編でボツになった、激しさのある曲がいくつか並びます。このうち二曲は、日本盤ボーナストラックになっていますが、ここでしか聴けない曲にもいい曲があります。なんとしかしてこの二枚組を安く手に入れてください。
