炭鉱の町コールウッドの高校生、ホーマー・ヒッカムは、たまたま見た人工衛星に魅せ られて、ロケットを作ろうと思い立ちます。何の知識もない彼が友人たちと実際にロケ ットを作っていく過程が、丹念に描かれています。折しも、炭鉱が斜陽になっていく時 代の中で、新しいことにチャレンジしていくロケットボーイズを、家族や先生や町の人 が暖かく支援していくのが、なんともほほえましいです。特に、彼の母親は常に息子を 信じ、意志を尊重し、励ましてりっぱでした。その後、ホーマーはＮＡＳＡの技術者に なって、自分の夢をかなえるわけですが、いついかなる時にも、夢を持ち続けることの すばらしさを教えてくれた本でした。

とても素晴らしい小説だ。
まるでコールウッドの炭塵が胸に入ってしまって、それで苦しいのかと思うほど、読んでいて胸が苦しかった。全体的に見れば爽やかな青春群像劇で、ロケットボーイズの頑張りは感動を呼ぶ。苦しかったのは、とても現実だったからだ。主人公サニーの家族は、ほとんどの現実の家族と同じく、バラバラだ。数々のすれ違いや、タイミングの悪さ。様々な祈り。ほとんどの部分がノンフィクションだというこの小説は、「ロケット」ともう一つ「家族」という軸がある。町全体が家族のような場所、コールウッド。人生は輝かしいばかりではない。だが苦しいばかりでもない。本当に家族はバラバラだったか？じゃあ家族の絆って？

ロケットが空に向かって飛び立っていく、その音、ヴィジョン。読み終えたあとは解き放たれた気分。

この上巻を読み終えてまさか下巻を読まない人はいないだろうと思われます。
買うならぜひに上下巻揃いでないと、下巻を買いに走りながら、悔しい思いをするかもしれません。
