   運命的な出会いによって、英国富豪（ローレンス・オリヴィエ）の二度目の妻となったアメリカ人女性（ジョーン・フォーティン）。しかし、大邸宅をしきるのは別れた先妻レベッカの召し使い（ジュディス・アンダーソン）であり、何かにつけて彼女につらく当たり、陥れていく。やがて、そのレベッカの死体が見つかり、マキシムが犯人に疑われるが…。
   イギリスでその名を挙げたアルフレッド・ヒッチコック監督の渡米第1作で、原作はダフネ・デュ・モーリア女史の同名小説。スリラーではあるのだが、女性心理をついたメロドラマ的趣向を巧みに取り入れているのが特色でもあり、また随所にヒッチコックならではの凝ったアングルや構図がふんだんに盛り込まれている。アカデミー賞作品・撮影賞を受賞。日本初公開は1951年。（的田也寸志）

見る人の心理を自在に操るヒチコック得意の映画です。

緊迫感溢れる展開は、ヒチコック映画の中でも上位に入る映画。その緊迫感の中で格段にひかるジョーン・フォンテーンの静かな美しさにも必ず引き込まれてしまうはずです。この心理もヒチコックは織り込み済みなのでしょうか。ヒチコックの女優シリーズの傑作です。この映画で彼女のファンになった人も多いはずです。

ＣＧ映画を卒業し、映画自体のすばらしさに目覚めた若い人に勧めたい古典的作品です。 以後同じ筋立てのミステリーがたくさん生まれ、その意味でもルーツ的存在です。

モノクロ映画で時代を感じさせる映画ですが、ヒッチコック独特の感じが出ています。幻想的でもあり、主人公のローレンスオリビエが主人に不信感を抱きいていく過程と、前妻のレベッカの幻影に怯える姿が実によく表現されている映画です。字幕も良いですが、日本語吹き替えもあると子供に見せられてもっといいんだけどな？（でも子供がこんな映画見るかっての！？）

実力派製作者デヴィッド・Ｏ・セルズニックの招きで渡米し、いくつかの企画の中から消去法で選んだ、ヒッチコック監督アメリカ時代の第１作目です。いわゆるスリラー映画とはちょっと異なりますが、語り口の上手さは抜群で、特に後半はぐいぐい引き込まれます。ローレンス・オリビエもジョン・フォンテーンもセルズニックに押し付けられた配役で、ヒッチコック自身は決して満足していなかったようですが、個人的には悪くなかったと思います。
