最近、新作が発表されず、ファンとしては少し寂しい感があったが、本書は、警察小説に新しい視点を取り入れ、一時期大ブレイクをした横山秀夫が本格デビュー前に「サントリーミステリー大賞」に応募して佳作になった幻の処女作品の文庫化である。

今回の発行に当たり、多少改稿作業はされたらしいが、初稿時のみずみずしさは失われていない。

それどころか「あと１日で時効」というタイムリミットを中核に置いた「サスペンス」と、真犯人が最後までわからなかったり、ドンデン返しがあったりという「本格謎解きミステリ」の体裁もしっかりと両立維持している。

「警察小説」でありながら「青春小説」の色合いもあったり、果ては「三億円事件」まで絡んできて、若き日の著者のあふれんばかりの創作意欲がうかがえる、ファンのこのところの飢餓感をいやす、横山ミステリーの原点とも言える、色んな要素テンコ盛りの傑作だった。

　横山秀夫に裏切られたことは一度もない。特に短編にはハズレがなく、もはやミステリーの枠を超えた、どれも名人芸としか言いようがない傑作ぞろいである。
　そうは言っても……という不安がないわけではなかった。処女作ということは、作家になる前に書かれた作品であるということだ。なかなか文庫化されなかったのも、高すぎる読者の期待の水準にまだ達していない作品だからではないか。
　しかし杞憂に終わった。
　読み始めるや否や作品世界に引きずり込まれた。十五年前の自殺が殺人だというタレ込みが入り、忘年会に興じていた管轄の警察署員に緊張が走る。時効が成立するまであと二十四時間しかない。容疑者が集められ、その中の一人喜多の目線で語られる回想と、現時点での署内の動きが平行して物語を織り成してゆく。過去と現在が入り乱れながら、劇的な事件解決に向かって収斂してゆく構成は見事としか言いようがない。
　むろん欠点がないわけではない。容疑者の学生時代の行動や会話には不自然さが見られるし、視点のブレや少々クサい場面もないわけではない。また三億円事件という実際にあった事件をフィクションに登場させているのも、評価が割れるところではあろう。
　ともあれ単に「横山秀夫の処女作だから」というだけの理由で読むのは失礼な、優れた作品であることは間違いない。むしろ横山秀夫のその後の長編のほとんどがオムニバス形式になっていることを思えば、これほど統一性があり完成度の高い長編は横山作品随一と言えるのではないだろうか。ファンならずとも必ずや満足する極上のエンターテインメントである。

デビュー作ということで、たぶんいまいちなんだろうと思って読み始めたら、
止まらない、止まらない。
後の横山作品の濃密さはないが、ストーリーテリングは見事。
伏線の張り方、回収も見事の一語。
２回の改稿を経たとはいえ、
これで大賞が取れないなんて。
サントリーミステリー大賞って、映像化に向く作品ばかりで、
ミステリーとしてはいまいちというのが私の中での位置づけだったのだが。


横山ファンもそうでない人もまずはご一読あれ。
決して損はしないから。
