　愛する妻を交通事故で失って自殺願望を持った白人刑事と年老いた黒人刑事のコンビ。メル・ギブソンもマッド・マックス以降ヒット作に恵まれず製作のジョエル・シルバー（４８時間やダイ・ハードなど）に口説かれて作った作品です。アメリカでは公開前から続編決定がされていたのにも関わらず日本ではあまりヒットしませんでした。友人に言わせると「ただメル・ギブソンがいじいじしてるだけじゃん」とのことでした。確かにそうですが今は日本でもメンタルヘルスに関心がもたれる時代。自殺願望とか死にたいけど死ねないという気持ちは分からない訳でもないので共感できます。監督はアクションが始めてのリチャード・ドナー。後半警察がどの程度知っているか聞き出すために拉致して拷問にかけることが返って命取りになるというお話しはお粗末ですがヘリに向かってベレッタＭ９２の１６連射は爽快です。だけど拳銃撃つ時にメル・ギブソンが引き金をガク引きしてたり、撃つ瞬間目を閉じていたりとガンマニアの間では物議をかもした。「羊たちの沈黙｣のジョディー・フォスターはちゃんと目を閉じずに撃っていました。
