ロースクールの指定教科書です。授業では細かいところまで聞かれたので、この本だけじゃ足りないところや、わかりにくい箇所もありました。正直最初は使えない本だなという印象でした。
しかし、今は、百選の解説や他の詳しめの本で行間さえ埋めてしまえば、商法総則、商行為の範囲を一瞬で回せてしまえるので非常に便利だな、と思っています。
手にとって頂ければわかる通り、この本は薄くて分量がかなり少ないです。ですから、正直「足りない」と思うときがあると思いますが、適宜資料室などで調べてみるといいと思います。
結論からいうと、少なくとも新司法試験対策に関しては、この分野の基本に据える本としては、この本しかないと思います。
実際、多くのロースクールで指定教科書とされているのではないでしょうか。

4.0 out of 5 stars 詳細かつ平易な記述（リーガルマインド手小切法に対応している）, 2009/10/26
商法総則・商行為法は論文で何時出題されてもおかしくない分野である。会社法や有価証券法との

関連では尚更である。本書はそんな中にあって手頃な（本文１８０ページ）基本書と言える。

本著者の手小切法に比べると脚注部分が少ないので初学者はそのまま読めばいいと思う。

中・上級者は定義を確認しながら設問だけやるという方法もあるかと思われる。

また、２版第３刷で平成１８年度信託法に関する修正が行われている。１０頁１６頁。

商法総則・商行為法をカットするのも一つの方法かもしれないが、敢えて危険を冒さなくても

本書を試験前に通読しておくことは商法の基本原理を理解する上からも無駄ではないと言える。以上

条文，判例，学説を網羅し、システマティックに構成されたベストセラー。
もともと研究書・体系書ではなく、教科書・試験対策書ですから、
薄いとか足りないとかいってもしょうがありません。
テキストだとわきまえれば、これで必要十分だと思います。

最近では、ほぼこの本の一人勝ち状態です。競争相手はかなり少ない。
しかし、独占の原因は、本書がどうという以前に、そもそも、
「商法総則・商行為法」の存在自体が揺らいできていることにあるのでは
ないでしょうか。長年の批判や、債権法改正の議論を見ても、
「商法典」でひとくくりにする必要性は限りなく希薄になっています。

「商法総則・商行為」「手形法・小切手法」という枠組みはもう
不要だと思います。新型取引を加え、手形法を削減した上で、
この2冊を「商取引法」として整理統合するというのはどうでしょう。
そうすればコストも低くなるでしょうしね。
