ドビュッシーの「ベルガマスク組曲」（1905）ではまだ印象主義が確立されていない、と言われています。ところがラヴェルの「水の戯れ」（1901）のほうは、印象主義ピアノ音楽の最初の成功作とされています。以上の経緯もあって、ラヴェルは13歳も先輩のドビュッシーに先んじていた、と評価されたりもするのですが、このような余計な知識もあったせいで、私はラヴェルをずっと印象派だと思っていました。でも、ドビュッシーのほうはともかくとして、ラヴェルにまで印象派というレッテルを貼りつけるのには無理があるようです。

「ボレロ」は、ご承知のように、似たような2つのテーマが、変奏されることもなく、しばらくは和音もつけられずに、楽器の組み合わせを変えるだけで8回反復される、ラヴェルの＜音の魔術師＞振りが際立つ作品です。大変知的で斬新な発想でつくられていますが、個人的に私はこういう知性とは相容れませんので、ろくに聴いたこともないくせに、印象派ならドビュッシーだ、と漠然と考えていました。でも、そうではない、と気づかせてくれたのが、このクリュイタンスです。ーークリュイタイスの「ボレロ」は、感動的です。そもそも私には「ボレロ」で感動できるという発想がなかったもので、はじめてこれを聴いたときは大変驚きました。もし私のように「ボレロ」と＜感動＞とは無縁なものと思い込んでいる方がおら!れましたら（そんなのは私だけかな？）、是非こちらを聴いてみてください。

ついでにご紹介させていただきますと、クリュイタンスにはフォーレのレクイエムを振った名演もあります。こちらは文句なしの＜超名盤＞です。これ以上のフォーレを今後聴くことができないとしても、私には全然不満がありません。

アンドレ・クリュイタンス指揮／パリ音楽院管弦楽団の「ボレロ」は、ボレロ好きの間で評判が良いらしいので聴いてみた。が、正直思ったほどではなかった。
曲の前半ではテンポがふっと速くなったり一瞬抑えたり、スピード調節に苦心してる感じがする。特にスネアドラムは、聴いていて少し気持ち悪くなった。酔ったというか…。
後半ではトランペットがイッパイイッパイな感じで、しかも盛大に音をはずす。割と素人の私が「えっ」と驚くんだから、初聴きの人でも「あれ？」と思うのでは…。あの外し方は結構、目立っていた。「それもご愛敬」と思えないこともないけれど、私はちょっと引っ掛かるものを感じた。
細かい点を除けば、全体的には華やかで粋な感じ。トロンボーンは文句なしで上手いし、後半の盛り上がりも良かった。各パートなどを聴きこむには良いのかもしれません。
