何やら意味深な暗いジャケットのせいか、地味な印象を与える作品である。ところがどっこいこれがなかなかバラエティに富んだ名盤だ。シングルカットされた、「ＢＥ　ＮＩＣＥ　ＴＯ　ＭＥ」、「Ａ　ＬＯＮＧ　ＴＩＭＥ，Ａ　ＬＯＮＧ　ＷＡＹ　ＴＯ　ＧＯ」，「ＰＡＲＯＬＥ」は、どちらかというと、トッドの王道ポップ路線だが、それ以外の楽曲もこれと言ってつまらぬ曲はない。個人的には、ギターがかなりやかましいハードロック「ＢＲＥＥＤＩＮＧ」、しっとり聴かせる「ＷＡＩＬＩＮＧ　ＷＡＬＬ」、「ＴＨＥ　ＲＡＮＧＥ　ＷＡＲ」、珍しいアコギの弾き語りからドラマチックに盛り上がる「ＣＨＡＩＮ　ＬＥＴＴＥＲ」が好きだ。この作品から、散漫な印象を受けるリスナーの方もいるだろうが、この作品でしか聴けないタイプの曲もあり、次作以降のステップアップを予感させる名盤だと思う。

　1971年に発表されたソロ２作目。
　とにかく、やりたいこと全部やってみました！　みたいな、おもちゃ箱ひっくり返したみたいに賑やかだった前作に比べ、本作は、ザ・バラッド・オブ…と敢えて謳っているように、おとなしめの楽曲で統一している。（ただし、すべてがバラッド調の曲というわけではない）
　ニック・デカーロが取り上げた「ウェイリング・ウォール」は、トッドのベスト１０に入るくらいの名曲だが、それ以外は、「トッドの」バラッドとしては、やや凡庸な出来の作品が多い。彼なら、もっともっと美しいメロディを創造できたはずだ。…ま、この後以降の快進撃が凄すぎたからなんだけど…
　以前ある雑誌のトッド特集で、本作を一番のフェイバリットに挙げていた評論家がいたが、私は異見である。次作以降から、ほんとのトッド･ワールドが全開したた思っているからだ。
同じ４☆だが、タッチの差で、前作のほうが良いと思った。
