チック・コリアとジョン・マクラフリンの約40年振りの共演が実現した“ファイヴ・ピース・バンド"の2枚組ライヴ盤。
あのマイルス・デイビスの歴史的名盤『ビッチェズ・ブリュー』以来40年振りの共演ということで、2007年末から話題となっていたチック・コリア(p, key)とジョン・マクラフリン(g)の共演。
ケニー・ギャレット(sax)、クリスチャン・マクブライド(b)、ヴィニー・カリウタ(ds)を従えたオール・スター・スーパー・バンド“ファイヴ・ピース・バンド"で、昨年10月よりスタートし、各地で大絶賛を受けたヨーロッパ公演の音源を2枚のCDに収めたのがこの作品。
マイルスのナンバー「イン・ア・サイレント・ウェイ」にハービー・ハンコックがゲストで参加した「イッツ・アバウト・ザット・タイム」など9つの白熱のセッションが聴ける豪華なライヴ盤で、この2月2日から8日(4日を除く)まで、同メンバー(ドラムはブライアン・ブレイド)で「ブルーノート東京」に登場したが、本作は“ファイヴ・ピース・バンド"のクラブ公演は恐らく世界唯一とされるその来日を祝した“来日記念盤"でもある。
70年代を意識したようなサイケ調のジャケ写真もいい感じで、チックのピアノとキーボードに絡むジョン・マクラフリンのギターが絶妙な緊張感を与え、バンド全体に得体の知れぬエネルギーが迸る! (The Walker's 加瀬正之)

チック・コリアとジョン・マクラフリンというジャズフュージョン界の巨匠2人が組んだ夢のようなユニットによるライブアルバムです。2008年秋に行われたツアーを収録。メンバーは、チック・コリア、ジョン・マクラフリン、クリスチャン・マクブライト（b）、ケニー・ギャレット（sax）、ヴィニー・カリウタ（d）という豪華な面々です。チック・コリアとジョン・マクラフリンはマイルズ楽団の「イン・ア・サイレント・ウエイ」以来ということですから、およそ40年ぶりという共演になります。

CD2枚組という圧倒的なボリュームで繰り広げられるパフォーマンスはまさに圧巻。曲はマクラフリンの近作とRTF時代のコリアの作品を交互にプレイする形ですが、お互い70歳に近いにもかかわらずエネルギッシュ＆ハードなプレイにはド肝を抜かれます。そして、圧巻はCD２に収められた「イン・ア・サイレント・ウエイ」から「イッツ・アバウト・ザット・タイム」の珠玉のメドレーです。言うまでもなく今は亡きジョー・ザヴィヌルのペンによる名曲で、エレクトリック・マイルズを語るうえで欠かせない名曲。しかも何とハービー・ハンコックがピアノで飛び入り参加しています。涙なくして語れません。もちろんラストの「いつか王子様が」も涙なくしては聴けません。

老いてもなお盛んとは言いますが、ハンコックを含めてこの3人は本当に化け物です。持ち前のテクニックに熟練のワザがスパイスとして加わり、「大人のジャズ」なんていう生やさしいものではなく、本物の熱いジャズを聴かせてくれます。これは間違いなくDVD化されると思いますので、さらに期待です！
