個人的にはアルバム通して聴いたときの満足感はこちらの方が上ですよ。
叙情的でドラマティック、冷ややかで鋭い攻撃的なサウンドを惜しみなく披露してます。
次作「マスター・オブ・パペッツ」は妙に垢抜けていてイケません。
そのわりに完成度において圧倒的に勝ってるとも思えないですし、
やはり「ライド・ザ・ライトニング」をないがしろにする理由は無いですね。

1曲目「Fight Fire With Fire」アコースティックギターから幕開け、
荒々しいリフを刻み始めます。この鋭いギターはメタリカの肝でしょう。
2曲目「Ride the Lightning」も続いて攻撃的でスラッシーな曲。
ただこちらは曲構成に工夫がみられます。ジャーマンメタルに通じる勢いも。
3曲目「For Whom the Bell Tolls」鐘の音が印象的。ギターによるメインテーマと
ザクザクとしたリフがカッコイイ。インストパート重視の曲。
4曲目「Fade to Black」叙情的でメロディアスそしてドラマティックな名曲。
このアルバムで一番好きです。ここで聴けるギターはメタリカ随一ではないでしょうか。

5曲目「Trapped Under Ice」テンポアップしてギター弾きまくり。複雑なギターが聴ける。
歌メロもなかなかカッコイイ。これもジャーマンメタルのよう。欧州人とは趣味が合います。
6曲目「Escape」前半でキャッチーな歌メロが、後半で怪しい歌メロが聴けるトリッキーな曲。
7曲目「Creeping Death」堂々としたサウンドと確かな構成力を持った定番曲。
この曲なくしてメタリカは語れないんじゃないですか？それほどの曲。
8曲目「The Call of Ktulu」間違いなくメタル史上最高のインスト曲の一つ。もはや奇跡。

「マスター・オブ・パペッツ」以降のアルバムはヘヴィネス好きの一般リスナーでも評価します。
メタル好きであればこそ次作でなくこちらを評価してください。
メタラーのためのメタルアルバムですから。

当時はかなり異質な音だったんだろうけど
今聞くとかなり正統派な感じ。
やっぱりクリフがいなきゃメタリカは駄目だなぁ
THE CALL OF KTULUが最高に好き。
メタル好きでこれ聞いてなんも感じない人はいないでしょう！

メタリカを語る上で避けては通れない大傑作のセカンド。
個人的にはスレイヤーの『REIGN IN BLOOD』と並んで、「スラッシュメタルとは何ぞやの？」の私の疑問に素直に応えてくれた思い出深い作品なのだが、そのような個人的思い入れを除いても、本作がスラッシュメタルというジャンルを代表する一枚であることを否定することは出来ないだろう。

特に、スピードを追求するあまりに時に重さが失われてしまっていた当時のスラッシュメタル界において、それらを共存させることに成功した1は、全世界の蛮音愛好家の耳に好意を持って迎えられたに違いない。
かくいう私も1を最初に聴いた時の衝撃は未だに忘れられず、未だにヘヴィーローテーションの一角に入り込んでいる。

また、これ以外にも未だにライブの定番となっている3や7、名バラードの4、名インストの8は特に必聴である。
