2008年の夏、日本を席巻したと言っても過言ではない“さかなの子・ポニョ”。その生みの親である宮崎駿監督は、どうやってポニョというキャラクターを思いついたのでしょうか。
作品の準備期間から絵コンテが出来上がるまでの約2年半もの間、1台のカメラが宮崎駿監督に密着。
NHK・荒川格ディレクターと宮崎駿監督の対話を通じて、創作の秘密と知られざる素顔に徹底的に迫っています。
収録し続けたテープは合計200時間以上。

鈴木敏夫プロデューサーが、どこかのインタビューで「宮崎監督の家にはブルーレイはおろか、ＤＶＤもない。だからいつもビデオで観ている」というコメントがあったが、まさしく本作はこの偉大なる「アナログ」監督・宮崎駿その人を追いかけたドキュメンタリーだ。しかし、現代のドキュメンタリーで１２時間半というのも凄いが、収録中のスタジオ内のＢＧＭに著作権が発生したため、半年も発売が延びた、っていうのも凄い。ＮＨＫも博報堂も何をしていたのか（笑）。宮崎監督は「ポニョ」を引退作品と考えていたようで「幕の引きがいがある作品に」と語っていたが、大石内蔵助のような悠然たる仕事ぶりを観ていると、まだまだリタイアはしないな、という感じだ。それにしても、天下の公共放送局・ＮＨＫが１私企業にカメラを持ち込み、ずーっと回しているという行為も尋常ではない。個人的に取材ディレクター氏の朴訥としたナレーションは嫌いではなかったが、世界中どこを見回しても、オスカー監督にこれだけ張り付いた例はない。弁当食べるとこまで写すことはなかったと思うのだが・・・。まあカップワンタンが好きなことはわかった（笑）。他にも「ゲド」に対する冷淡な対応とか、あからさまに機嫌が悪い日とか、これだけ「素」な姿を曝け出す必要がどこにあったのか。まるでジブリの社員になったかのような視点で１２時間半を眺めていた。ドキュメントとしては５つ星を付けているが、編集して２時間くらいに出来た素材でもある。そういう点では逆に星ゼロだ。まあ、今回の「売り」が１２時間ということだったので、緊張感ある半日を過ごさせてもらった面、それとあえてこのまま発売したことに５つ星評価です。

宮崎氏の製作過程に張り付いていたディレクター本人がナレーションをしているんですが、ひどい喋りです。なぜ普通にNHKのアナウンサーを呼んでこなかったのかなあ。あと、１２時間という恐ろしい長時間の割りに内容が希薄なのは、編集がどうしようもないから（笑）。
しかし、ときおり宮崎氏がポロッと漏らす本音はとても重要です。「僕はもう既成の起承転結のよくできたストーリーの映画なんか作りたくない」⇒開始早々近年の宮崎作品に関して核心をついた発言をされるのでびびってしまうのです。「昔のようなものを見たいなら、昔のやつを見てればいい。僕はそれと別はのものを作る。同じものを作って何の意味がある？」⇒これはずっと以前から言ってますね。
ともかく、ディレクターが宮崎氏に執着しすぎる余り、「映画の制作を追う」という視点が希薄になってしまっているのが惜しいと思いました。手描きならではのアニメーション技法がいっぱい詰まった映画なのですが、技術解説が全くありません。宮崎氏自身が描く原画⇒撮影⇒調整⇒彩色⇒完成フィルム、と順に追うシーンもあるのですが、どうもディレクターがアニメ知識皆無なようで、何の解説も入ってないのです。
あとこういう言い方はどうかと思うが、元気なうちに撮っておいてくれて良かった、とは思います。

「もののけ姫はこうして生まれた」がおもしろかったので、これも買ってみたが、見ててつまらんかった。カメラマンが悪いわあ。
