本書の元版は１９９２年に白地社から出版されたが、長らく絶版であり現在の古書価は定価の倍以上になっている。私は最近それをほぼ定価で入手できたので喜んでいたら、この文庫化である。タイミングの悪さに悔しがっていたのだが、本書の「文庫版のための少し長いあとがき」を読んだら、そんな思いはどこかに消えてしまった。普通ならわざわざ同じ内容の本を２冊も買ったりはしないのだが、この文庫版は特別である。

その「あとがき」は是非多くの人に読んでいただきたい。そこには、元版の刊行後に新たに判明したボン書店店主の鳥羽茂に関する事実が記されているからである。そのきっかけは、著者への鳥羽茂の実の妹からの連絡だった。それによって出生地や出生年、その最期が明らかになる。そしてさらには鳥羽の一人息子が存命であることを知る。

「巧すぎるよ、内堀さん！」とは解説を書く長谷川郁夫氏の言葉。この言葉は、「あとがき」を読んだ者にしかわからないだろう。これを読むだけでも買う価値はあろう。涙なくして読むことはできないとだけ言っておく。

＜ボン＞といふ書房つくりて三十路にも達せず逝きし詩人ありけり

鮮烈な詩本づくりに燃えつきし若者ありて＜鳥羽茂＞といふ

専らに詩歌の古書を商ひつ教へ子追ひぬ＜鳥羽茂＞をば

教へ子の書きし好著に忘らるる詩人の生涯甦りけり

遺児さへも知らぬ生涯ほり起こし教へ子書きぬ詩人の紙碑を

　ごく素直に「いい本」といいたい本だ。
「ボン書店」という出版社をたった一人で経営し、優れたセンスとデザイン感覚の詩集を三十数冊出版した後、たった28歳で病死した鳥羽茂の足跡を、古書店の店主である著者が探っていった本である。
　本の「作者」のように注目されることはなく、たんに本の奥付に名は残すのみの「出版人」を、作者が愛情をもって探っていく姿がまず良い。そして、その結果見えてくるのは、昭和初期のモダニズムの詩が流行の最先端だった時代に、青春をモダニズム詩に賭けた、当時の最もトガっていた若者たちの姿だ。インターネットも、ラジオさえもなかった時代に、小さな印刷機だけを武器に田舎町から作品を全国に発信していた中学生（旧制）たちの姿。そしてそれを受信し、投稿という形で情熱を伝えあっていた姿。この時代の若者たちはこんなふうに夢を伝えあっていたのかとおもう。
　全体に貧乏な話でもあるのだが、不思議と暗い印象が無いのは、モダニズムというのが日本の文学史上空前絶後といっていいほどに爽やかな明るさを持った文学運動であったことと、そして鳥羽茂が決して営利を求めつつ失敗して貧乏だったわけではなく、採算を度外視して美しい本を作ろうとして貧乏な状態に陥っていた、その志の明るさを感じるからではないか。
