   高倉健と降旗康男監督、木村大作カメラン。『鉄道員（ぽっぽや）』などで知られる黄金トリオが放つ新作。特攻基地のあった鹿児島を舞台に、戦中から激動の昭和の時代を生き抜いた、かつての特攻隊員・山岡の生きざまを描いていく。
   昭和が終わり平成の世となって、かつての特攻隊の生き残り仲間が自殺する。病に侵された妻・知子（田中裕子）の余命がいくばくもないことを知った山岡は、戦時中彼女の婚約者であり、南の海に特攻していった韓国人・金山中尉の遺族を、夫婦で訪ねていく…。
   鹿児島の象徴ともいえる雄大な桜島が、ここではどこか寂しげに、山岡夫婦の静かながらも熱い日々を見守っているのが印象的。ただし、健さんのセリフはまったく鹿児島弁になっていないのが難点。（的田也寸志）

宮川軍曹が鳥浜トメさんに｢ホタルになって帰ってくる｣と言ったエピソードは実話です。でも既に他界された鳥浜トメさんも散華された宮川軍曹もこの映画のストーリーには憤りを覚えるのでしょう。今日に至るまでのメディアの一方的なサヨク思考と何ら変わりはありません。今のメディアは太平洋戦争で日本軍が悪かったような偏見を持ち、真実を捻じ曲げて報道しています。｢平和を護ろう｣だの｢戦争反対｣だの薄っぺらな呪文ばかり唱え、大衆も流されているようですが、当時の多くの特攻隊員たちも日本の平和を護ろうと必死に自らの命を捧げたのだと思います。｢平和｣とは社民党や共産党が呪文を唱えれば得られるのではなく、時には命がけで護らねばならないのだと思います。そういう時代の彼ら彼女らの??持ちを伝える映画にして欲しかった。いつの日か真実に大衆が目覚めてこの映画の製作関係者も反省する時がくることを願います。

健さん主演の戦争映画だと期待して見てみましたが、｢何か変だなぁ｣と不愉快な気持ちのまま見終わってしまいました。鳥浜トメさんは晩年、マスコミから特攻隊についての数々の取材を受けたときに｢マスコミは私の言いたいことや特攻隊員の生き様を全然伝えようとしない｣と嘆いていたそうですが、また同じ類の映画を作ったようですね。鳥浜トメさんも天国で悲しんでいると思います。期待に裏切られ最後の製作者欄をみていましたら、｢あーあ、やっぱし…｣、製作協力か協賛か忘れましたが“朝日新聞”の名前がありました。がっかりでした。
