オーケストラの弦楽器でやや控えめな存在であったヴィオラを、「内声の補佐役」から旋律を奏でる楽器へと引き上げた先駆者に、ライオネル・ターティスがいます。さらに前進させ、立派な独奏楽器としてのポジションを確立させた功績は、プリムローズによるところが大きいでしょう。ハイフェッツ、ピアテゴルスキーとのトリオにおけるアンサンブルの力量もさることながら、男性的で朗々とした音質~ことにC線の美しさと、卓越した技巧をもって歌い上げる演奏は、ヴィオラを輝ける存在へと高めたのでした。擬古バロック様式における堅牢性も魅力ですが、「イタリアのハロルド」における天かける自在度と英雄性は、ヴィオラ演奏史上の金字塔ともいえるでしょう。
