ＮＨＫ出版「シリーズ・哲学のエッセンス」はかなり玉石混交だが、本書は小泉義之『レヴィナス』と並ぶシリーズの白眉である。納富は、三十人政権の成立と崩壊というアテナイの歴史を視野に入れてプラトン対話篇を厳密に読み解く。『カルミデス』が生き生きと蘇るだけでなく、有名だが何となく釈然としない感じがつきまとう「洞窟の比喩｣も、ソクラテスの刑死という政治的文脈において、初めてそのメタファーの意義が明らかになる。ソクラテスは相手に必ず「Yes/No｣を言わせながら議論した。このソクラテス対話こそ哲学の原点であるが、しかしそこには、我々のコミュニケーション様式とは異質の何ともいえない違和感が付き纏う。この違和感は哲学の核心に関わる何かなのだが、哲学的言説は過酷な政治的言??の中にしか｢生まれる」ことができなかった。まだ｢哲学」という知が存在しない中で、しかもソクラテスという｢哲学者」が失われた中で、プラトンの孤独な戦いが始まったのである。哲学よりも哲学者こそまず問われるべしという、納富の問いは重い。

　世間一般で四十代といえば立派に中堅どころなのですが、哲学という分野では四十代といえばまだまだ若手らしいです。
　そんな哲学の世界にあって、今年（２００４年現在）三十九歳という若手のホープ納富信留氏の書いたプラトン本がこれです。

　この本を読むと、プラトンがどうしたとか、哲学がどうしたとか、そんなことよりも、著者の情熱、つまり「俺って哲学大好きなんだよねぇー！！！」という魂の叫びが聞こえてきます。
　哲学に疲れた哲学科の学生や、古代哲学を志しながらもギリシャ語の変化にうんざりしている学生にはぜひお勧めです。

　著者の叫びを聞いて、もう一度心を奮い立たせてみませんか？

おそらく「プラトン」という名前くらいしか知らない、という人が手にする本。平易な文章で読みやすく、
史実など丁寧に書かれてはいるが、目新しさはなく、可もなく不可もなし、といったところ。
哲学を専攻している学生には今更という感じだろう。良くも悪くもあまり刺激がない。

逆に対話篇などを読む気はさらさらなく、雑学、教養としてプラトンについて知っておきたい、
という人には適していると思う。そういう意味では比較的良書に見える。
