ボブ・ディランの最高傑作との呼び声が高いこの作品は間違いなく音楽史に輝く名盤中の名盤と言えます。フォーク・ロック・スタイルを確立したディランの音楽性と文学的価値観が見事に融合した作品で、音楽史上初めて２枚組のアルバムとしてリリースされました。『女の如く』や『スーナー・オア・レイター』など、このアルバムには彼の代表作が数多く収録されており、ディランの音楽を聴いたことのない人にとっては入門編とも言える作品です。
６０年代を駆け抜けたディランの一つの到達点でもある作品として知られています。

　ディランほどのアーティストとなると、最高傑作といっても一つや二つではない、「フリー・ホイーリン」、「血の轍」の他最近作もあげられるでしょう。が、そんな中絶対に忘れてはならないのが、この一枚。
　「プレッジング・マイタイム」、「ジョアンナのヴィジョン」、「メンフィス・ブース・アゲイン」、「女の如く」など楽曲だけでも、今でも歌い続けられている超名曲ぞろいである。おまけにアルバムの構成、と言うか、曲順などもかなり決まっていて、レコードでは２枚組だった大分量もグイグイ聴かせてしまう。
　歴史的にもフォークスターからロックスターへ、また、スターからバイク事故後の隠遁生活者への突入と分岐点になっている頃のアルバムでもある。
　私はリアルタイムに聴いたものではないが、最初聴いた時はショックで目まいを覚えたくらいである。リアルタイムではかなり冒険的なアルバムであっただろうと思う。リアルタイムでのリスナーの方がうらやましい。
　未だお聴きでない方には是非ともお勧めします。このアルバムが無かったら今のロックは無かったとは言はないが、かなり違ったものになっていたことでしょう。

表題のようにこのアルバムを表現したのはDylan本人。
20年くらい前のPlayboyかなにかのインタビューで答えていたのを鮮明に覚えている。
それくらい的確な比喩なのだ。やはり自分の作品は自分がよくわかっている。
やはりこの作品はDylanの最高傑作である。
１曲目のバカさわぎから最後の哀愁漂う長い曲までDylanの詩的ワールドが
シンプルなサウンドの中で舞い踊り、なにもしなくともトリップできてしまう。
どの曲も歴史に残る名曲ばかりだし、Dylanがたどり着いた一つの最高峰。
今まで出たロックアルバムの中でも５本の指に入る大名盤であることは間違いなし。
星五つどころか十個あげても惜しくない。
