4.0 out of 5 stars ブッダの教え・ブッダの優しさを「縁起」の論理で易しく解説, 2009/5/20
　ブッダの教えをこれほど明快に分かり易く解説した本はおそらくこれが初めてであろう。ここには「四諦・八正道」や「十二支縁起」という難解な教理の説明はなく、それでいてブッダの真意、人々への優しさが丁寧に説明されている。評者もその魅力に惹かれて、思わず一気に読んでしまった。
　ただ、読み終えてみると若干の疑問が残る。筆者は「他人がいて自分がいる」「自分がいて他人がいる」という関係を縁起と呼んでいる（縁起Ａ）。これはいわゆる「相互依存（相依性）の縁起」のことであり、3世紀のナーガールジュナの『中論頌』にその萌芽は見られるものの、７世紀のチャンドラキールティによって確立された縁起観である。これを千年以上も前のブッダの言葉の解説に適用するには、読者に対する何らかの予備的説明が必要ではないだろうか。また筆者は「弟子が問うからブッダが答える」「弟子が問わなければブッダは答えない」という関係も縁起だとしている（縁起Ｂ）。これは、時間的な前後関係を前提とした関係であり、縁起Ａの関係（「問いがあるから答えがある」「答えがあるから（それを前提として）問いがある」）とは異なるものである。縁起Ａは時間的には同時に存在する論理的な関係を指す。それに対して、後者の時間的に不可逆な関係を表す縁起は、輪廻と解脱を説明する十二支縁起（「煩悩があるから苦がある」「煩悩がなければ苦はない」）の特徴である。このＡ・Ｂ二つの縁起の違いを筆者は不問に付している。筆者はブッダの教えが歴史的変遷の中で変化・発展してきているとは考えていないようである。また、ブッダの教えとナーガールジュナの論理とをあまりにも巧みに（実に見事に）結びつけている。そういう点にいささかの不滿は感じるものの、やはり、これほど分かり易い仏教解説書は希有である。
　仏教にもともと親しみを感じている人ばかりでなく、今までブッダやその教えにまったく関心を持たなかった人、あるいはむしろ反感を覚えていた人にもぜひ一読をお勧めしたい。
