日本を代表する(いわゆる)フュージョンバンド「カシオペア」の
キーボード奏者が書いたエッセイ集。
音楽との関わりを中心にした彼自身の生い立ち、
カシオペア結成前後のエピソード、世界各地を演奏で回った際の雑感など、
熱狂的なカシオペアファンには非常に貴重な内容だ。

中でも最も興味深かったのが、
カシオペアの「音楽性」についてジャンル的な位置づけを語っている部分だ。
上で「(いわゆる)フュージョン」と書いたが、
なぜ「いわゆる」を付けたかと言うと、本書の中で向谷実自身が、
「カシオペアの音楽は、本来のフュージョンとは異なる」
と語っているからだ。
彼に言わせると、本来の意味のフュージョンとは、
真のジャズミュージシャンがロックのテイストを取り入れた
あくまでインプロビゼーション(即興演奏)中心の音楽のことであり、
事前にアレンジが明確に定められたカシオペアの音楽は、
明らかにそれとは異なるとのこと。
ここまで、自らの音楽性に関する深いコメントが
プロミュージシャンから出てくることは極めて貴重なのではないか。

ただし、上述した通りファンには実に貴重な内容だが、
それ以外の読者が読んで面白い内容では全くないので注意。
文章のレベルもお世辞にも素晴らしいものではない。

それでもマーケットプレイスでプレミア価格で売られているところを見ると、
本当に熱狂的なファンは、まだまだ少なからずいるのだろう。
もちろん、私もそんなファンの一人である。
本書の中で向谷実は、例えばマイルス・デイビスなどの
真のジャズミュージシャンに対して、「とても真似は出来ない」と
心からの尊敬が伝わる文を書いている。
同様に、我々ファンもカシオペアのメンバーに対する
尊敬と羨望の念を持ち続けているのだ。

海外に目をむけ活動するバンドのなかでも、かなり精力的に活動しているカシオペア。雑誌などでは、あまり語られることの無かった海外での活動が細かく記されている。日本でのライブではすべて完全な状態でライブを行っている彼らも海外となると話しは別。輸送の関係で楽器が来なかったり、など興味深い内容がいっぱいですね。

中学生の頃からカシオペアが好きで、よくＣＤなどを聴いていたのだが、やはりファンとしては「是非読んでみなければ…」と思い、購入した。
現在でこそ活動がおとなしいが、この頃(10数年前)はノリに乗っていた。輝いていたと思う。
この本を読むと、ワールドツアーでの裏ハナシなどがなかなか面白く書かれている。
特にキーボード担当の向谷実の話が気に入った。彼の事をファンは「ムカイヤミノル」ならぬ「司会谷実」(シカイヤミノル)と呼んでいるが、まさにその通りだと思った。
