プログレッシヴ・ロック界の重鎮達により奇跡的に結成されたスーパー・グループ“エイジア”。
“3分半ポップソング”をキーワードに、キャッチーなメロディ+プログレッシヴ・ロックのエッセンスという特徴をソング・ライティングに存分に取り入れ、幾多もの名曲を書き上げました。
1982年にデビュー・アルバム『ASIA(詠時感〜時へのロマン)』を発売。この作品はなんと全米NO.1を9週連続キープ、全世界で1500万枚のセールスを達成するという快挙を成し遂げた。1983年にはセカンド・アルバム『ALPHA(アルファ)』を発表し、これも全米チャート1位を記録。その後幾多のメンバーチェンジを行いASIAの名前は継承されて不定期ではありますがオリジナルアルバムは計8枚リリースしています。
今回の復活劇は数年前からジョンとジェフの二人を中心にエイジア再結成に向けた話し合いをおこなった結果実現しました。このフルオリジナルメンバーでの奇跡の復活に全世界が注目しています。

『アルファ』や『詠詩感』の曲をiTunesに読み込み、パソコン作業のBGMにするくらい惚れ込んでいます。キーボード、ギター、パーカッションすべてがカッコいいの一言で、未だに飽きません。なので、最初のメンバーでの再結成、アルバムリリースは感激でした。ああ、それなのに…。この気分は何でしょう？円熟味を増したという表現もあるでしょうが、全体に落ち着きすぎてしまっていて、引き込まれるような魅力に乏しい気がします。せっかくキラ星のごとく才能あるメンバーが集まったのだから、もう一歩先を目指すアルバムにできたはずだと思うのですが。フェニックスも、年を重ねて悟ってしまったのでしょうか。

　来日公演での「Roundabout」が、プロにあるまじきバラバラの演奏で、イやな予感はしていたのですが、ほぼ的中してしまった感じです。思うに、ASIAの良さってのは、長い演奏は省くも、劇的さは失わない所だったはず。ところが、新作はとにかく演奏に元気がありません（特にギター）。
　1曲目だけはロックの盛り上がりを見せるも、2曲目のイントロぐらいまでしか続かず…後は軽めのポップスといった演奏。ジョンのヴォーカルだけが独り頑張ってます。タイコも軽めだし… グングン盛り上がる「コンパクト・ドラマ」は、何処へ行ってしまったの？！
　各方面で絶賛、大ヒットに、試聴もせずに手を出してしまいましたが、レンタルしてからにすべきだった…。同じ頃、同じく復活したWHITESNAKEの新作も買ったのですが、白蛇の圧勝ですね。やっぱり年を取ってロックをやるのは大変なのかな…。白蛇は、演奏隊は若いから。
　すっかり年老いた演奏に、25年の歳月を感じたのでありました。同じ時代を過ごした50代のオジサン向けです。
