購入前に自分がこの本に期待してたものは全イベントの会話ログを網羅した、本書を読むことでもう一度ゲームのイベントを体験できるような感じのものを期待していました。 しかし本書を読むことで本当にがっかりさせられました。 会話ログや詳細なストーリーの解説どころかあらすじしか載っていないあらすじ本でした。ミッション、クエストの簡単なあらすじしか載っておらず(あと本当にほんのちょっとの会話ログ)とてもゲーム内でのイベントを紙面上で再体験できるようなものではありませんでした。 アルティマニアの名に自分が期待しすぎていたのかもしれませんがせめて評判のいいミッションやクエストだけでももう少し詳しく書いてもらいたかったです。 ゲーム内でイベントを終えた人には物足りなく未体験の人には意味が分からないものになっているような気がします。
ただ開発者の方々のインタビューは結構面白かったです。

ミッションやクエストをゲーム外から補完や補強する設定、資料本ではなく
内容を大まかに紹介して関連ミッション、クエストとの流れを示したカタログ、ダイジェスト本
設定や人物像をもっと知りたいというような人向けではない
~Life in Vana'diel~のような内容を期待すると痛い目を見ます
たしかに初出の内容もある程度散りばめられてはいるのですが

攻略本でもないのでxxのNPCで〜、ooのアイテムが〜という指標にもなりません

FF11のこういった背景資料は、独力で収集するにはかなり骨が折れる作業となることと思う。
主要ミッションを進行させる内に、断片的にあらわになってゆくそれや、広大な世界に散らばった語り部のようなそれらに触れて、少しずつ見聞を広めてゆくという... 一プレイヤーが紐解くには、それは途方もない行為だ。
本書では主に以下の項目が取り上げられている。


・ヴァナディール創世記からなる、主要四国形成までの大まかな流れ
・水晶大戦概要
・アトルガンから辺境都市まで含む、周辺国家関係等成り立ち
・全リージョン概要、プレイアブルキャラ・獣人他クリーチャー解説
・表題ヴァージョンまでの、全ミッション・クエスト解説
・開発者インタヴューetc...


これらの膨大な資料を、"生きた活字で"読めること。本書がすばらしい点は、まずこれが一点挙げられるでしょう。
例えばミッション解説にしても、まるでデータの列挙のような資料集が過去散見されたことが記憶に蘇ります。
本書のクエスト解説を挙げると、依頼主の紹介から始まり、クエスト完遂までの概括的な流れ...に留まらず、それら一つひとつにも簡単な注釈が入るという芸の細かさ。

しかし改めてFF11のバックグラウンドを掻い摘んでみると...　アトルガンの秘法でヴェールを脱いだ"近東"。それと交戦状態にあるという"東方諸国"の存在。
また、ミスラの本国(ウホッ)があるという南方他の存在など、まだまだ掘り下げられそうなソースがまだこんなにもあったのかと...　思わず唖然としてしまいました。

FF11オフライン全然視野に入るだろこれ...　ともかく、ファン必携の一冊と言っても過言ではないでしょう。
