オペラ「蝶々夫人」の登場人物にちなんで名付けられたこのアルバムで、作詞・作曲を担当するリヴァース・クオモは、ありのままの心情をグロテスクなまでに吐露している。
2ndアルバムとなる本作は、粗削りな”ウォール・オブ・ギター”と、やるせない絶唱ヴォーカルで、1stアルバムのポップさとは打って変わって、ハードなサウンドになっている。

収録曲はすべて実際の出来事に基づいて書かれており、中でも、日本からのファンレターにインスパイアされたという「Across the Sea」や、『毎日違う女の子と寝る生活に疲れた』と歌う「Tired of Sex」等が人気が高い。
このアルバムでWeezerの地位は不動のものとなり、国内外を問わず、数多くのフォロワーを生み出した。

2ndが出た!なにはともあれめでたい!どこか壊れてるウィーザー独特のパワー・ギター・ポップは今回も絶好調。いや、よりキレてるというべきか。胸キュンなメロディはどこまでもせつなく優しく、voのリヴァースくんが書く歌詞は前作以上にパーソナルでナード。チマチマと悩む彼の姿は、やはり他人事ではすまされない。またしても彼らの世界に浸ってしまうぞ。ラストのアコギの弾き語りなんてウルウルもんよ。
