5.0 out of 5 stars 情報の可視化入門, 2009/4/12
情報可視化の世界では有名なBen Fryによる、実際のデータを用いた可視化の事例を、Processingと言うプラットフォームを用いて紹介する本。地図上への情報のマッピング、グラフ（データ構造）の可視化、ツリーマップと言ったよく使われそうな事例が、Processingを使って実際に動く形で紹介される。デザインと情報科学の両方のバックグラウンドを持つ著者ならではの本だと思う。

ちなみにこの本は、Processingの機能を網羅的に紹介するリファレンスでもなければ、「簡単な図形を描いてみる」といったサンプルコードの並んだチュートリアル集でもないので注意。前者には"Processing: Creative Coding and Computational Art"、後者には"Learning Processing: A Beginner's Guide to Programming Images, Animation, and Interaction"と言う優れた書籍があるのでそちらをどうぞ。

「どうしてオライリーの本の日本語訳は毎回こうもすばらしいんだろう」と毎回うならされますが、執筆陣のレベルの高さもあるんでしょうね。
P5を包括的に学ぶ本ではありませんが、個人的にBenFlyのファンなので買いました。
データの処理などプログラム初心者の私にとって大変有用な情報が多く含まれているのに加え、プロジェクトを進める際の注意点(データを過度にユーザーへ供給しすぎていないかなど)を繰り返し検証しその都度「じゃあここをこうしてみようか」とプログラムを書き直してくれます。プログラムがブラッシュアップされていく過程がとても興味深かったです。
初心者がいきなり完成したコードを見ても意味がわからないですが、BENと一緒に少しずつ書き足していく過程で多くのことを学べました。

追記
BenFlyのp5解説本（青いの）を購入して読んでみて、英語のわかりやすさに感心いたしました。簡単なのに行間にはウィットと知性が漂っていて、ますますBenFlyが好きになってしまいました。ぜひぜひあわせてお読みになることをおすすめします。
この本もおそらく平易な英文で書かれているのだと思います。データ収集についての彼の見解部分はあるいは読みにくいかもしれませんが、大学生以上なら原文でも大丈夫かと。

Javaでグラフィック（視覚化）というとawtやswingの面倒なイベント処理を
書く必要があり、敬遠していたが、Processingは正にスケッチ感覚で
グラフィカルに情報を視覚化できる。
また、情報をどのように収集するか、どのように表現するかについて
筆者の考えが示されていて、とても勉強になった。

但し、コードで若干の誤りや、抜けがあり、自分で補いながらでないと
記載通りの実行結果にならない部分も多々あったため星４つ。
