心理学の大学院受験を考えている場合、英語と専門分野の基礎を学ぶのに、この本は最適な教科書だろう。心理学の論文は、多くの場合、それほど難しい英語が使われているわけではない。比較的平易な英語を早く読む能力と心理学特有の言い回し、論理の進め方、テクニカルタームさえ理解できていれば、基礎は十分である。一部の予備校で行っているような難度の高い英文を読む練習よりはこの本がすらすら読める程度の能力が大学院生にはむしろ求められている。また、それで十分である。残りの時間は、心理学的なセンスを磨くことに使って欲しい。

アメリカの大学で最もよく使われている教養心理学の教科書である。教養といっても侮るなかれ、社会心理・臨床心理だけでなく、生理心理学や統計など様々な心理の分野をもりこんでおり、非常に広い心理学の範囲をすべてカバーしている。大学院入試の参考書として使用するものも多く、英語の勉強もできて一石二鳥である。英語はプレーンな英語で書かれており、英語がわからなくてお手上げと言うことはないだろう。
公務員を心理で受験する方などは広い範囲をこれ一冊でカバーできる。2002/5/31にこれを訳した日本語版が出版されたが、訳の確認もできるので非常に心強い。日本語版よりもかなり安いし、写真・イラストが多く飽きることなく勉強できると思う。

目次を見てもわかるようにこの本の特徴の一つとして挙げられるのが、「情報の網羅」のすごさである。 アメリカで使用されている心理学の教科書だけあって、この本を読めば心理学の基礎はつかめることができるようになっている。心理を勉強するのには辞書のように引いて使用することも可能。
カラーで図版も多く、理解の促進に必ずや役立つであろう。小見出しも心理学の教科書だけあって概念の整理がしやすいように並べてあるところも便利だ。
