後に(01年)に突如復活しましたが、本作はバンドが長い眠りにつく前の、完全なジェフ・リンのソロ作と呼んで良い作品です。前作では、かろうじてバンドとしての体裁を成していましたが、本作ではついにメンバーはジェフを含めて三人となっていて、しかも他の二人は客演の印象が極めて強いです。
しかしバンドの存続の情熱は衰えても、ジェフ・リン自身の楽曲に対する創作意欲に変わりはないです。ELOお得意の曲展開にキャッチーなコーラスの(1)からして、まず期待通りの音を聴かせてくれます。ちなみに今回のCDのボーナス・トラックには、(1)のマイナー調バージョンもあり、こちらも聴きものです。他にもシングルになった(2)や(8)、(3)や(6)に(7)といったバラード等、全曲水準を越える佳曲揃いです。
発表当時はやや不当な扱いを受けた作品でしたが、再発を機に再評価される事を望みます。

いかにも80年代風なシンプルなジャケと（ELOにしては）低調に終わったチャート
アクションのせいで長らく過少評価されてきた感の強い本作。
楽曲的には非常に充実しています。

前2作に感じられた「ゴテゴテ感」が無くなり、久々に「ディスカバリー」に通じ
る軽やかさが戻ってきました。
（この開放感は悪名高いJETレコードからの移籍が影響大？）

これまでは妙に浮いていたロックンロール路線の曲も、本作では無理なく全体の
流れに収まっていて、自然体のELO（＝ジェフ・リン）サウンドが楽しめる好盤
だと思います。

ながらくリマスターが待たれていたが、遂にジェフ・リン本人も加わってのリマスタリングで、デジタルだが温かみのある精巧なサウンドにシャープさと音域の広がりが出た。ヘッドホンで聴くとTrk1の出だしから快感で痺れそうだ。

改めて聴いても、「タイム」でのシンセの活用を極限まで高めて、かつリズム処理にまで応用した事で、エレポップの域にまで進化したサウンドに賛否があるし、ＥＬＯ名義というにはあまりにジェフ色の濃い製作スタイルに対してもファンですら賛否があることは事実だろうが、個人的にはメロディの冴えでいえば「ディスカバリー」に匹敵するとさえ思う。

Trk1とTrk8の２曲は最高域のキラーチューン。前者はフック満点の転調に、後者はサビのあまりの甘美さに天才的なジェフの冴えを感じずにはいられない。そしてTrk3、Trk7の強烈な切なさ、まさにジェフ自身がＥＬＯへの惜別の思いを歌っているかのようだ。これらの楽曲を柱として他の曲もサウンドに負けないキャッチーさで迫ってくる。

更に本作には７曲のボートラが入っている。勿論過去に何らかの形で世に出ている音源もあるが、ここに統一的にまとめられた事の意義は大きい。かつ、本作の製作風景を垣間見させる興味深い音源が詰まっている。Trk11をイントロとするTrk12はTrk1の別テイクだし、Trk13とTrk16は同一のメロディだが歌詞が異なる。メロディ重視のように誤解されそうだが、音節や韻を含め歌詞にまで試行錯誤をするポップ･マエストロの製作の断面を見る思いがして非常に興味深い。

この値段では本当にお値打ちだし、食わず嫌いの方には虚心に聴いて欲しいと思う。
