この本は、読み進めるほど哲学的になってくる。光悦の「刀を究極に美しくあらしめるためには、刀であってはならないような気がした」という言葉に反応し、「天下無双」柳生石舟斎を思い浮かべる武蔵。
だが、それだけの苦悩がありながらなお刀を研ぐ光悦と、自分が自分であるために剣を振る武蔵は、誰よりも近いところで生きているのかもしれない。
研ぎ澄まされた刃のような武蔵と小次郎に魅入られてしまった私にできることは、物語の進展を見守ることだけだ。

又八編はいつもつらいです。
かつて同じスタートラインに立っていた友人に、どんどん取り残されていく辛さ。読者として客観的に見れば、才能も努力も雲泥の差だし、そもそもスタートラインすら違っていたかもしれないと分かるのですが、多分又八本人は気が付いていない。自分の無能にも怠惰にも気付かず、ただ華やかなイメージのみ追いかけている男。最近のニートな若者になぞらえたのか、昔からある出世争いの悲喜劇を取り入れたのか、いずれにしろ自分にも身に沁みるところがありすぎて辛いです。

今回の又八も醜さ全開。ここまで醜く描かなくても、と思うくらいの役割が振られています。武蔵の方は引き続き単純な勝ち負けから戦う意味を求める世界へ、出会う人、出会う事件毎に少しずつ進んでいます。その精神性の高まりに対して又八の夢の下世話なこと…。つらい。
ベタですが秀才型の武蔵、天才型の小次郎、凡人の又八と、ここに来てそれぞれのキャラクターが一層立って来た気がします。彼らを今後どう動かし、どんなドラマを語って行くのか、作者の考えが楽しみです。

武蔵対小次郎がとうとう迫ってきています。本当に井上さんの画力・構成力にはため息が出ます。。スラムダンクも素晴らしかったですが、バガボンドを読んでから井上さんの漫画家としての凄さを改めて実感しました。次巻楽しみにしてます！
