2.0 out of 5 stars どんなふうな悪訳かというと, 2003/7/31
読みにくいのを我慢して読んでいたら、心理学者マスローのhierarchy of needsを「基本的な必要性の等級」と訳してあり、たまげた。これはふつう「欲求階層」もしくは「欲求段階」と訳される。どちらがわかりやすいか一目瞭然。さらに致命的なことには、physiological needsを「心理的必要性」と訳してあり、これには心臓が止まった。よく見てもらいたい。psychologicalじゃない。physiologicalだ。「生理的欲求」と訳すべき。まったく正反対の意味になってしまっている。だいたい「食物、水、空気」と書いてあるのに、どこが「心理的」なのだ。よく知らないんだったら、心理学の本くらい開けよ、と言いたくなる。こんな調子の訳なので、気をつけてください。訳の悪さを度外視すれば、読む価値はあります。（原書にはあたってませんが、マスローの用語なので、おそらく上記の英語が使われていると思います）

本書の日本語はかなり読みにくい。ただし、確かに訳は酷いが原書のエッセンスはとても重要なものばかりなのですぐにあきらめるのはもったいない。金銭的に余裕のある人は買っても損はないだろう。ただし、自分で個人的に要点をノートなどに整理していく作業は必要である。
ところで、私は学生時代数学の問題集で答えが間違いだらけのものを買ってしまったことがある。はじめの頃は酷い買い物をしたと思ったが、段々使っていくうちにその問題集の間違いを探し出して、赤ペンで直すことにやりがいを見出し、結果として数学の成績が上がったという経験がある。このことが本書の件にも当てはまるかどうかは定かではないが、悪書も使い方で良書になることがあるということを私は学んだのである。

　エンタテイメント作品（脚本なり小説なり）を創作するためのワークブックとしてなら星三つ。読み物としてただ読むだけなら星一つ。こんなに評価が低いのは、すべて訳文が悪すぎるため。こんなにひどい訳はめったにお目にかからん。とりあえず日本語の単語は並んでるけど、意味がよくわからない箇所ろもあったし（わたしの読解力が足りないのか？）。

　訳の拙さはひとまずおいて。この本の中にある演習問題をまじめにとりくんでいけば、「面白いお話」とは何か、の理解の一助になると思う。小説や脚本を何かの公募に出してみようかなという人は、そのネタがこの本の演習問題の要求しているものを全て満たしているかどうか試してみるのもいいかもね。
