《コードウェイナー・スミス》を代表する、というか、《SF》というジャンルそのものを代表する、傑作中の傑作が、ついに待望の復刊です。《オールタイム・ベスト》級の作品なので、SFファンにとっては《必読書》と言っても良いでしょう。また、娯楽小説としても、意外と読みやすく仕上がっているので、SF初心者の方にもオススメの一冊です。読み所は、コードウェイナー・スミスならではの、異宇宙の《濃厚なリアリティ》にあるのだと思います。読んでいると、ページの向こう側に、無限の《異宇宙》が広がっているような錯覚をおぼえるほどです。《SF》というジャンルに興味のある人には、避けて通れない、真の《傑作》だと思います。

　以前から購入リストに入っていたのだがなかなか見つからず、復刊されてはじめて絶版になっていたことを知る。日々数多くの本が出版されるのは良いことだけれど、簡単に絶版になるのは困りもの。こういうことが頻発するようになると、グーグルのやっていることは正しい気がしてくる。

　一万五千年くらい未来、人類補完機構という組織が人類に規律を与えている世界のお話。ノーストリリアと呼ばれる惑星で飼われている巨大な病気の羊からは、ストルーンもしくはサンタクララ薬という不老長寿の薬を精製することができる。この薬はノーストリリアに莫大な富をもたらしたが、その富によって堕落し外敵に乗っ取られることを恐れた昔の人々は、惑星外からの輸入品に二千万パーセントもの関税をかけ、かつての貧しい暮らしを維持することを選択した。
　ノーストリリア人は常に外敵から狙われており、肉体的にも精神的にも強いことが求められる。このため、16歳になったときに、ノーストリリア人として十分な能力を備えていると判断されなければ、安楽死させられる。
　ロッド・マクバンに待っているのは、安楽死という運命のはずだった。しかし、様々な偶然と必然の結果として、彼は死を免れ地球への旅路につく。彼の行動が人類の未来にもたらすものとは。

　作者の思想が垣間見える作品だと思う。
　マクバンに地球を買われてしまう隙を見せながらも、彼に課税して金を回収しようとする人類補完機構からは官僚組織の抜け目の無さを。ニュースは禁じられ集団で議論もできず、争いは無いが何も生み出さない真人の生からは、知らずに支配されている恐ろしさを。活力にあふれ社会を支えながらも、虐げられ救いを求める下級民からは精神世界の力強さを感じる。
　マクバンとオンセックの和解やク・メルとの別離で選択される解決は、価値ある生が何によってもたらされるか、という問いに対する作者の答えである気がしてならない。
