僕は、ジェネシスに軽く人生を狂わされました。
十代の頃、彼らの(ガブリエルの？)作り出す幻想的な世界観の完全な虜になってしまったのです。

本作は、そんな彼らの出発点的な一枚。
なんてたって、フィル・コリンズ、スティーヴ・ハケットの二人が加入したんですもの。

この二人の天才の加入は、この時点では、まだ、楽器演奏者に留まっている感じが興味深いです。

楽曲は全体的に粒揃い。
バラエティ豊かで、ここまで個性的なバンドはいまだに知りません。
　
そう、「個性的」という言葉が、ジェネシスほど似合うバンドもないでしょう。
出来れば、訳詩を片手に聴いてもらいたい。

ガブリエルの描く詩の世界観が、このバンドのイメージにつながっている部分も大きいのだから・・。

そして、彼らの幻想音楽は頂点に達した。新たにステファン・ハケットを迎え、
黄金の体制となったバンドは、物語性をともなった強固な世界観を構築、
名曲中の名曲“The Musical Box”の妖しいげな空気は、最高の音質とともに耳に迫ってくる。
リマスターにより迫力を増したドラムとともにハケットのギターの音色も際立っていて、
後半からラストへの流れは泣きの叙情が押し寄せるじつに感動的なもの。
全体的な完成度からすれば、「Foxtrot」、「Selling England〜」の方が上かもしれないが、
この幻想的な物語世界はGENESISの作品中でも最高のものだろう。

個人的には最高作。プログレはプログレですけど偏屈なハードロックって感じがするんですが。
