1888年シカゴ生まれ。1933年に短篇「ゆすり屋は撃たない」で作家デビューを飾る。1939年には処女長篇『大いなる眠り』を発表。1953年に発表した『長いお別れ(ロング・グッドバイ)』で、アメリカ探偵作家クラブ(MWA)賞最優秀長篇賞に輝いた。1959年没。享年70。
