CSNYとしての約10年ぶりとなる新作は、同名映画のサウンドトラック!

2006年に実施されたCSNY再結成コンサート『Freedom of Speech』ツアーのドキュメント映画であり、2008年1月に行われたサンダンス映画祭のフィナーレを飾る作品として出品された。ニール・ヤングの『リヴィング・ウィズ・ウォー』からの楽曲とCSNYの名曲がフィーチャーされたこの作品で一貫して打ち出されているのは、ブッシュ政権とイラク&アフガニスタン戦争への痛烈な批判である。

２００６年のＣＳＮＹツァーのサントラ盤。映画のＤＶＤ日本盤が待ち遠しいが、ＤＶＤとの収録曲の数等の異同は不明。しかし、映画「ラスト・ネヴァー・スリープス」とサントラ盤「ライヴ・ラスト」の関係のように、本ＣＤだけでも充分ＣＳＮ＆Ｙ、特にＹのエネルギーが伝わってくる痛快な作品だ。何しろ、Ｍ２、Ｍ１６を含めて収録曲の約半分がニールのアルバム「リヴィング・ウィズ・ウォー」の曲で、バック・バンドも同アルバム制作時のメンバーを起用している。このアルバムの音の疾走感、自国が戦争中なのに反戦を訴えない若手に手本を示すかのようなメッセージ性、社会と切り結ぼうとする強いニールの意志に共感を覚える人なら、本作も気に入るだろう。荒々しさに分厚いコーラスが加わり、「リヴィング・〜」の曲はどれも素晴らしい演奏だ。ＣＳＮ（Ｙ）の曲もそれに引っ張られて力強い。Ｍ１は聴衆との合唱だけ。原曲より約３分長くなったＭ６やＭ９はエレキ・ギターを多用してロック色が強く、Ｍ１４もアレンジが少しアーシー。一番懐かしさを感じるＭ１５では今の時代を背景にして歌詞に新たな意味づけを意図しているかのようだ。

本作は「４ウェイ・ストリート」のロック部分が大半を占める作品だと考えるとイメージしやすいだろう。「リヴィング・〜」の主要曲の合間にＣＳＮ（Ｙ）の名曲を嵌め込んだ、全体で１つの壮大な「リヴィング・ウィズ・ウォー」組曲と捉えるべき２１世紀の作品だ。そして静かなピアノにシンセ等がかぶさるスタジオ録音のＭ２、Ｍ１６が作品全体を引き締めている。

「リヴィング・〜」の曲が中心でありながら、ニールのエレキ路線の佳曲「フラッグス・オブ・フリーダム」が収められていないのが残念。それにしても、０６年の時点で歌詞にオバマ氏を登場させたニールの予言者ぶり（Ｍ１０）には改めて驚く。
