チャイコフスキーの交響曲というと、ほとんどの演奏が後期交響曲に集中して、特に6番の悲愴がもてはやされている。ところが、先入観を取り去って、初期の曲を聴いてみて頂きたい。2番の小ロシアや、3番のポーランドは、それ程面白くないかもしれないが、1番の冬の日の幻想をじっくりと聴いてみて頂きたい。チャイコフスキーがこのような目の覚めるような、思わず息を飲むようなハッとする曲を書いていたのに驚くであろう。私は、この曲をカラヤンの演奏で初めて聴いたわけだけれど、聴いた後、思わず唸ってしまい、このような名曲が、何故、くるみ割人形と同レベルで、世の中に知れ渡っていないのかと思ってしまったのだった。当時はなかったSHM-CDが発売されて、真っ先に買う決意をした。皆さんも、先入観を捨てて、録音の少ない、前期交響曲をカラヤンの名演で聴いてみて下さい。

チャイコの初期交響曲を知ったのはむかーしむかしFMのクラシック番組で
聴いたのがきっかけです。そのときは「ポーランド」だったのですがお店に
CDが無く仕方なく「冬の日の幻想」を買いました。
若さ溢れる素直な曲でフィナーレの盛り上がりについつい唸ってしまいましたね。
先にレビューされた方も書いているとおり、4〜6ばかり取り上げられていますが
1〜3も引けを取らない名曲揃いと思います。ただ、やはり（素人の見解ですが）
3以前と4以降で作風が変わったように感じるのも確か。プロの演奏家や研究者は
この違いで1〜3をあまり取り上げないんでしょうかね・・・？
何はともあれ、カラヤンが、決定版といっても過言ではない、チャイコ交響曲全集を
残してくれたことに感謝。
