まさしく書名のとおり、ダーウィン『種の起源』に何が書いてあるのかを紹介した本。ダーウィンや進化理論一般についての本は多くあるし、『種の起源』の出版にまつわるエピソードなどをまとめた本もある。だが、『種の起源』の内容そのものをわかりやすく解説した本は貴重だ。この本を読むのと読まないのでは、『種の起源』の内容の理解度がまったく違ってくると思う。実は私も『種の起源』を読んでみたが挫折した口である。正確には、ひとおとり読んでみたが、理解できない部分だらけだった。だが、この本を読んで、「そういう意味だったのか」と腑に落ちた点がたくさん見つかった。専門家の目にどう映るのかはわからないが、私のような素人にとっては非常に有益な書であることは間違いない。著者はサイエンスライター兼イラストレーターだが、学者にはこういう本は書けないだろう。とはいえこの本は進化理論をアバウトに説明したようなあるふれた代物では決してない。著者自身の日頃からの自然観察経験を存分に生かした博物学的な書でもある。また、進化理論につきものの「科学であるかないか」という問題にもかなりつっこんでいる。それは、ダーウィンが膨大な観察と実験を行った実践家であったとともに、科学理論のあり方を模索する哲学者でもあったことを受けているのであろう。この本を読んで、『種の起源』では進化理論に対してわれわれが抱きそうな疑問や批判がたいてい論破されていることがわかった。一方で、ときにダーウィンが「わからない」とはっきりと認めていることも印象的だ。ダーウィンを批判することは揚げ足取りか想像力の欠如だと思えてしまうほど、ダーウィンの存在が大きく思えた。

　本書は，本年の日本科学技術ジャーナリスト会議の科学ジャーナリスト賞2009において，科学ジャーナリスト大賞を受賞した．受賞理由は，難解といわれる『種の起源』をその後の知見を加えて読み解き、進化論に現代的な視点を与えた．ダーウィンの生誕200年，『種の起源』150年の今年に相応しい労作である．
　若干，”挑発的な”あるいは”辛辣”な文章があるが，言葉を慎重に選んだダーウィンの”書を読む”というスタンスからいえば，適当ではなかったかもしれない．だが，文章は大変に分かりやすい．一読する価値はある．なお，少なくとも２か所に誤植があり，160ページの右から９行目，「しないさい，」は「しなさい」．136ページ「Henning」は「Hennig」が正しいだろう．

ダーウィンはもちろんスゴイのだが、著者が見事に種の起源と自然選択説のエッセンスを要約している。種の起源を今読むときに障害となるのは、1.当時の知識人の宗教的背景を意識して書かれているので回りくどい 2.推測だけに頼っているところや現在では誤りが判明しているところも多い 3.翻訳が古い（近々新訳版が出るらしいが） 4.なんと言っても専門書、議論が詳細すぎる。
などだろう。なかなか一般人が気軽に読める本ではない。

本書は種の起源を読むという体裁をとりながら、現代的な知見も踏まえ（コラムでは断続平衡説や「種の維持論法」の問題も扱っている）見事に”種の起源”と現代的な”進化生物学”双方の入門書に仕立て上げられている。独自の進化観を広めようとする偽装入門書が多い中で、このような良書の登場はとても好ましいと思う。
