’０８年、「このミステリーがすごい！」海外編第６位にランクインしたスウェーデン発本格ミステリーと国際的社会問題小説が融合された重厚な作品。

主人公であるステファンは３７才の警察官。最近舌がんがみつかり治療までの間休暇をとることになるのだが、かつての同僚で今は引退したモリーンが遠く離れた中部スウェーデンの深い森のなかの家で惨殺されたことを知り、自身の病気で落ち着かない彼は現地に向かう。彼は地元警察と協力しながらも個人的に調査を行い、いくつもの秘密を発見するのだった。

そこから本書の謎に満ちたストーリー展開が始まる。まず、なぜモリーンは人里離れた森の中で隠遁生活を送っていたか。そしてなぜ、奇妙で残忍な殺され方をしたか。そしてすぐ近くで第二の殺人事件が起きる。モリーン殺害の犯人はなんと第二部ではじめから登場する。しかしその男は二人目は殺っていないのだ。では、誰がなぜ・・・。ここでアルゼンチンから来たこの男の第二の殺人事件の犯人探しも始まる。物語はただでさえ癖のある関係者たちに加え、モリーンの娘ヴェロニカの登場でさらに一層複雑な展開となる。

やがて事件はどうやら第二次世界大戦のナチス、そして現在もなお息づくナチズムの信奉者たちが関っていることがわかってくる。

病におびえ、死に恐怖するステファンが、まるで逃避するように事件に傾倒していく姿を縦糸とすると、最後の最後まで解決されない、先の見えない謎また謎の連続が横糸と言えるだろう。

本書は、ヘニング・マンケルの看板シリーズであるヴァランダー警部ものからはなれた単発の書き下ろしだが、スウェーデンの夕刊紙が選ぶエクスプレッセン賞やベスト・ヨーロピアン犯罪小説賞などを受賞している、読み応えのある傑作である。
