純粋にポップアルバムの完成度という点でとらえるなら、このアルバムは常にオールタイムベストの一角を占めるべき作品です。もしもわくわくするようなポップソングを聴きたいのなら、そしてシンセサウンドに抵抗がないのなら、是非このアルバムを聴いてみて下さい。

もともとELOはロックバンドがユニットとしてクラシック楽器奏者を含むことで、ビートルズがEleanor Rigbyで試みたことを究めるというコンセプトで始まりました。しかしそのサウンドスタイルは徐々に変化し、管楽器奏者の不在、オーケストラの導入などの変遷を経て、70年代末には強力なポップチューンに華麗なオーケストレーションと小気味のよいシンセサイザーを配するものとなっていました。そうして生まれたのがELOの最高傑作として称されるOut Of The Blueや、全世界でメガヒットを記録したDiscoveryなのですが、リーダーであるジェフ・リンはストリングスを使用するという制約を取り除き、かわりにシンセサイザーをこれまで以上に導入して新たな方向性を打ち出そうとしました。そうして81年に発表されたのがこのTimeです。

「時」をテーマに構築されたコンセプトアルバムであり、当時話題になった、「既に80年代を回顧する曲もある」などは時代を感じさせますが、アルバム全体を貫くポップセンスは今も古びることがありません。Twilightはジェフ・リンがこれまで作った中でも最高ランクのキラーチューンですし、21st Century Manは聴くものの心を打つ素晴らしい曲です。その他の曲も水準が高く、さらにボーナストラックとして入っているJulie Don't Live Hereはなぜアルバムに入らなかったのかが疑問視されるほどの名曲です。

いわゆる「ファン」からはベストにあげられることは多くないアルバムですが、それはストリングスの使用が制限されているなどといった、これまでのELOの路線からはずれていっているという理由も考えられます。もしあなたがDiscoveryを聴いて、Xanaduを聴いて、もっとELOのポップセンスを堪能しようと思ったとしたら、是非この作品にトライしてみて下さい。

「軟派のファン」としては、『アウト・オブ・ブルー』『ザナドゥ』そしてこの『タイム』を推薦します。これは、ポップ音楽に残る名盤だと思う。

「タイム・トラベラー」も名曲です。
未来はどんなに素晴らしい所かと来てみたが、こんな所だとは思わなかった。いっそ1981年に戻りたい・・・・。
81年のアルバムでこの歌詞は、泣かせます。

久しぶりに引っ張り出して聴きました。
これがＥＬＯの中で一番好きな曲かも。電車男のＯＰアニメの様に空を飛ぶ様な気分になりました（笑）。…そしてふと涙が零れました。こんなテンションの高い楽曲なのに不思議ですね…。２０数年前には未来をこんな明るい曲の様な時代になると信じてた人ばかりだったでしょうに…。今の様な時代になることを誰が希望したでしょうか…。
アルバム全体を通してならOut of the blueとDiscoveryの方がおすすめですが、個人的としてはTwilight一曲のためだけでも買う価値があると思います。インポートなら更に安いし（＾＾；）
