養子としてモンゴルから連れ帰った息子のリウ＝サンと一緒にパリで暮らしていたローラ。リウ＝サンの7歳の誕生日が近づいた頃、その身体に奇妙なアザが現われる。それを契機に母子の周囲で不思議な現象が次々と起きはじめた･････。『クリムゾン・リバー』の原作者であり、「フランスのスティーヴン・キング」の異名をとるジャン=クリストフ・グランジェの同名小説の映画化と聞き期待しましたが、娯楽性よりも、新世代フレンチ・スリラーの旗手ギョーム・ニクルー監督や、クローネンバーグ作品の常連撮影監督であるピーター・サシツキーらの作家性が勝ったアート・フィルムの仕上がりになってますね。

観客の興味をつねに物語の核心に引きずり込みながらストーリーを展開していくような推進力に欠けるので、各シーンのアートワークに優れた映像美を楽しむほうが賢明かもしれません。もはやモンゴルでさえ「アジアの神秘」として描けなくなっているのが現実。原作の設定を、モンゴルよりもっと神秘性を強く持つ別の場所に思い切って変える手もあったと思います。モンゴルとパリを行き来するロードムービーでもあるのですが、たとえば（例えが年代物でsorry）『エクソシスト2』のように主要人物が場所を移動するたびに、秘密のベールが1枚、また1枚と剥がされていくようなスリルに乏しいのが残念。

モニカ・ベルッチはアクションシーンなどで体を張ってよく頑張っています。「女」を感じさせるいっさいを捨て、ショートヘアにカジュアル・ウェアで、イメージを一新。ほぼスッピンでローラ役を熱演しています。ミステリアスな科学者に扮する大女優カトリーヌ・ドヌーヴに決して引けを取っていません。ミューズ「モニカ・ベルッチ」のファンにも『リメンバー・ミー』などより、こちらがオススメ。ある儀式のシーンで、これは観て得をしたと思える、モニカ体当たりの演技が拝めます。
