   圧巻なのは、美しいものを描写する著者、訳者の表現力である。水に浮かぶベレッツァという都そのもの、豪華なドレスやガラスでできた仮面はもちろん、小さな焼き菓子さえもぴったりの表現を与えられて輝いている。花火の打ち上げられた夜空を描写する文章はとりわけすばらしく、頭のなかには尾をひいて水の中に消えて行く花火がいつまでも残るだろう。

   本書にはいわゆる「悪役」も登場するが、それ以外の人物も決して清廉潔白で完璧な人間というわけではない。都を治める女公主シルヴィアは優雅で美しく、人々の信頼を集めているが、恐ろしいほど無慈悲で残酷な一面を持つ。ルシアンの師匠ロドルフォは思慮深く教養あふれる美しい銀髪の紳士だが、愛する人の前では嫉妬深いただの男になってしまう。著者は生々しい感情もきちんとすくいあげて描くことで、血が通った人物たちを作り上げている。

   また、物語には常に「死」の暗い影が見え隠れする。それは終盤になるにつれどんどん濃くなり、物語を一気に意外な結末へと導いていく。この死の存在もまた、本書にどっしりとした魅力を与えている。（門倉紫麻）
