　ブレッカー・ブラザーズ（以下BB）はその名の通り、ランディ＆マイケルのブレッカー兄弟のユニットである。レコーディングで売れっ子だった彼らが、スタジオワークでかせいだカネで自分たちのやりたいことを始めたという、否定的なイミでなくありがちなパターンである。ややハード目のフュージョン／ファンクで、ランディの書くちょっと変わったメロディラインと、２管のおどかし、マイケルのかっこいいソロが聞き物である。74年から81年までに６枚（ちょっとBBとは言い難いものがその前に１枚）のアルバムを発表し、この「Straphangin'」を最後に活動が凍結されたが、92年に復活して２枚のアルバムを出している。

　本アルバムだが、いかにも16ビートなリッチー・モラレスとマーカスのリズム体がいい。曲名が「エチオピア」だという噂があったのを聞いた音楽雑誌記者が「あの曲のタイトルはエチオピアですよね」とランディにたずねたら、「いや、それはエチオピアではない」（No, it is not Ethiopia）と答えたのでこんな変な曲名になったという逸話が有名な「Not Ethiopia」や、「Jacknife」は非常にスリリングだ。「Not Ethiopia」のリフはギタリストにとってよいトレーニングになるので、コピーしよう。

　弟のマイケルの方が一般に評価は高いのだが、やはりランディの曲作りがBB最大の魅力だと思っている。へーんなメロディなのだが、ランディの手による２管のアンサンブルとキーボードのアレンジは絶妙である。ワウワウ・ペダルを通してギター・アンプを使うというスタイルもいい。

　しかしながら、マイケルの近年の作品はあまり好きでない。彼のスタイルは随分と変わってきている。70〜80年代はばりばり吹きまくり、トレードマークとなっていた変え指フレーズを初めとする手癖だらけで、誰が聞いてもマイケルというプレイだったが、最近は比較的オーソドックスな演奏になっている。現在の方が音楽的評価は高いのだが、むかしの個性的なプレイが好きだった。ランディはランディでソロアルバムはなんとなく今ひとつである。トランペットのみのメロディラインは、やや説得力に欠ける。そう考えると、BBは二人のいいとこ取りだったようだ。

　ということで、ランディの絶妙な曲作り・アレンジと、マイケルの初期型ソロを楽しもう。

だれにもブレッカーブラザースは真似できない。だってソングライティングセンスがずば抜けているから。卓越したソングライティングセンスは時代を越える。それを実証。ハングリーで対応性に優れたミュージシャンを起用＝マーカスミラー／バリーフィナティー／リッチーモラレス／マークグレイ。ハードボイルドな雰囲気とパンチのきいたサウンドがかっこよい。ブレッカー兄弟は類いまれなるインプロバイザーであることをも再認識。１０点中７点　やりたいことをやった的な潔さがまぶしい
