二人のTears for fearsデビュー盤を約１０年ぶりに聴きました。「シャウト」や「ルール・ザ・ワールド」ではわからない、深い孤独と怒りと本来二人が進みたかったであろう方向が非常に伝わってきて、その後の大きな居心地の悪い大成功と分裂を知った今再び聴き直しても新鮮で変らない、「僕は弱い！」と叫ぶような強さが感じられました。名盤です。

セールス的には次回作があまりに有名ですが、TFFの代表作は？と聞かれたら、私は迷わずこちらを指します。楽器の使い方、音の使い方からみて誰も真似できないような作り方をしています。シンセ中心ですがこれに楽器をうまく絡めているところが妙で、ヒットしたMad World(全英3位)、Change(同4位)、Pale Shelter(同5位)の3曲は特に秀逸です。私は特にMad Worldが好きで、歌詞もさることながら「It's a Very Very Mad World」というフレーズがVery Britishでたまりません。（イギリス人はここぞという皮肉の場面でこの「Very」をよく使います。文法的な問題はどうでもいいみたいです。）創造性と研ぎ澄まされた感性、そして緊張感あるアルバムであり、これは80年代のブリティッシュミュージックを語る上で外せない一枚です。
