2枚のシングル、御大たちからの賞賛。そして必ず引き合いに出されるla's。
当然、この1stアルバムが伝統的なブリティッシュ・ロックとなることは間違いないわけだが、それでも90年代じゃあるまいし、何かしらのギミックはあるだろうと考えるのが普通。
ところが、ここには現代的なアプローチの片鱗すらない。本当にブリティッシュ・マナーに則ったメロディとサウンドしかない。それは驚くべきことに違いないが、つまりサウンドそのものには刺激的な要素などは皆無。今の時代にかえって新鮮と感じる向きもあるかもしれないが、現在のシーンを見渡してみればやはり絶対的に物足りない。
また、現在のイギリスの音楽シーンとの類似性を指摘される90年代ブリット・ポップの喧騒に巻き込まれた世代にとっては、苦々しい思いで受け取られかねない。
そんな思いで聴き始めたこのアルバムだったが...。

物足りなさは、1曲中どころかアルバム全編を通して高水準で維持される恐るべきソングライティング・センスの前にかすみ、それらしいサウンドとメロディに蹂躙された挙句の偏見も、ポップで瑞々しく、美しくもあるメロディとサウンドに吹き飛ばされてしまった。
特筆すべきは、やはりメロディとコーラス、クリアなギターサウンド、そしてインディーズ然とした佇まいと伸びやかにしなやかに聴かせる巧みさを兼ね備えたmark frithのボーカルが、美しさの中に見事に溶け合っている点だろうか。並大抵のセンスと力量では到底及ばない高みに達している。
ずっとそこにあったというような風格と、これからもずっとそこにあり続けるというような普遍性には、「10年に1人の逸材」という最大の賛辞ですら表現しきれないほど、地に足のついた圧倒的な存在感がある。

このサウンドでリバプールとくれば誰でも期待してしまいますね。

しかし、６０sでも７０ｓでもなく２００８年にこういった曲をやってしまうこのバンドのセンスは凄いと思います。しかもおちゃらけで昔をなぞってる訳ではなくしっかり現在までのロックにおける技法を盛り込んでの楽曲達には脱帽です。

「全然古くないけど、とても懐かしい・・」

亡霊を振り切って蹴散らして堂々と今を鳴らす事をオアシスは選択しました。
果たしてトルバドールズはどうなるのか・・それだけは少々気になりますが、化ければ世界の音楽が彼らを中心に回る事になるかもしれません。

ストーンローゼス以来、約20年振りにUKモノがいいと思いました。

彼らの奏でる音楽は、退廃でもファッションでもない、瑞々しさがあります。

ラーズ、ジェイホークスのような。


こういう音楽がちゃんと評価されなきゃ、なんてつまんない世の中だろうと思います。


音楽愛に溢れた、素晴らしい一枚。

10年後でも20年後でも、素晴らしい音楽を届けてくれるだろうと思わせてくれる、普遍のメロディです。


あたしゃついてくよ。
