The translator's note at the end is worth reading,

The translator’s note at the end of this volume has made me appreciate Sazae san more than before. He says that Sazae san is a window onto the past of Japan as well as something full of witty and funny conversations. It is really true, and I will read Sazae san from that perspective from now on. I just heard Sazae san is 27 years old and Namihei is 54 years old in manga. I had thought that Sazae san was at least in her late 30s and Namihei was in his early 60s, from the way they speak and act. Times have changed. Today, people look and act young, compared to Sazae san and Namihei.
