Carlino Goldoni氏のレビューについて興味を持ったので、少し調べてみた。

『コーヒー店』第2幕第16場、ドン・マルツィオの台詞「種類を見分けなければ」に対応する原文は"bisogna distinguere"であろう。すると文脈からして、問題の台詞には「煙草の種類を見分ける」だけでなく、「話の中身を区別する」の意味もかけてあると解釈できる。ドン・マルツィオは実際に「あなたは、自分の発言すらお分かりでない」と言い足している。

これはごく一例だが、『ゴルドーニ喜劇集』では、こうした原文の技巧を訳注者がまず理解した上で、詳しく注釈してほしかった。

レビューのタイトルはイタリアの有名な諺。

翻訳の精度が実に低く、ゴルドーニの真意が伝わらないので残念。二つの例を示す（以下の訳は独自に作成）。

●『キオッジャの喧嘩』第2幕第13場
オルセッタ：それもご記入ですか。
イジドーロ：記入しないとね。
オ：ではお書きになって．．．19歳（disnove）と*。
イ：事実を述べたと誓いなさい。
オ：誓う必要があるの？
イ：事実を述べたと誓いなさい。
オ：誓えというなら、本当は24歳だと申し上げます。

*『喜劇集』は「18歳よ」と誤訳。

●『コーヒー店』第2幕第16場
ドン・マルツィオ：ご存じないな。本物の煙草はラペですよ。
レアンドロ：私はスペインの煙草が好きです。
ド： スペイン産は粗悪だ。
レ：私から言わせてもらうと、スペイン産こそ、吸える煙草の中では最高です。
ド： おやおや、煙草の何たるかを私に説教なさるおつもりか。私は煙草を作り、人に作らせ、あちこちで買うし、いろんな種類も見分けられる。ラペ、ラペをお求めだ、ラペ（Rape', rape' vuol essere, rape'）**。
レ：そうですとも、ラペ、ラペ、確かに、最高の煙草はラペです。
ド： 違う。最高の煙草が常にラペとは限らない。種類を見分けなければ。あなたは、自分の発言すらお分かりでない。

この煙草論争でドン・マルツィオはラペに関して、それが「本物の煙草」であり「お求めだ」と言ったに過ぎない。だが、レアンドロは彼の語勢につられて「最高の煙草はラペです」と叫び、不覚にもスペイン産が最高品質との持論を否定したうえに、「種類を見分けなければ云々」と注意をくらう。この点が滑稽なのである。ところが『喜劇集』では、ドン・マルツィオの三つ目の台詞で**を記した個所が、「ラペだよ、ラペ。ラペが最高なんだ」と誤訳されている。その結果、ドン・マルツィオ本人の次の台詞と矛盾し、からかいの面白味が伝わらないばかりか、台詞の意味の把握自体も不可能である。
