オンラインゲーム「大航海時代」の拡張版付パッケージ。

よくある狩りゲーとは違い世界をまったりと航海することが出来ます。
職業は大まかに分けて世界を探検する冒険者、交易をしたりアイテムを生産する商人、海賊と戦う軍人（略奪を行う海賊）の３つになっています。
転職は容易に可能ですので冒険をしながら海賊と戦うキャラクターなんてものも育てられます。

他のオンラインゲームと違うところでは基本的にずっとソロでのプレイも可能。
実際の世界をモチーフにしているため、ゲームをしているうちに地理や歴史もある程度覚えたりも。

慣れてくると航海時間が少々マンネリ化しますが、そんなのんびりとした世界で旅がしたい方にお勧めします。

PC88以来　楽しんでいるゲームです。その昔コーエーさんに　アンケートのはがきを出したことがありました。その中で　360度ぐるりと周りを見渡せて、昼と夜の空が見れて･･･と書いたのを思い出します。そのときはずいぶん無理なことを書いていると　われながら思いましたが、それが実現しているのです。日進月歩とはよく言ったものです。ますますコーエーさんに無理なお願いをしてみようと思います。複雑な人生すごろくのようで　大人のゲームだと思います。面をクリアしていくゲームとは一味違うかな？と思います。1ゲーム（どこで区切るかも自分次第ですが）に結構時間がかかるのがチョット大変ですが、それが楽しめるならGOODなゲームです。

~La Frontera~ 結論から言ってしまえば究極の失敗作。

ペナルティ強化や上納品実装による海賊絶滅仕様、やらされる開拓地、部品を集めるだけのジョイントビルド、バランスを崩した副官、インフレロットなど秀逸であった大航海時代オンラインを台無しにしてしまった有料アップデートが~La Frontera~である。

けど、UPDATEしないと対人戦で勝てないんだよね。そういう仕様だから（苦笑
