ネットワーク上に創られた仮想の三国時代を舞台にプレイヤーがひとりの将として登場し、三国時代に生きるさまざまな人々との人間ドラマを創り上げていくMMORPG。本作の世界は、魏軍、呉軍、蜀軍の3勢力に分けられ、その下に関羽、趙雲、夏侯惇、周瑜、諸葛亮などの武将が存在しており、各プレイヤーはその武将に仕え、中原の制覇を目指す。プレイヤーは所属する勢力が支配する都市で生活し、生産や商売をしたり、都市の周囲のフィールドで狩りやダンジョンへの冒険をし、資金や物資を獲得。合戦は数百人ものプレイヤーがシームレスに闘うオープンバトル形式で行われ、それぞれのキャラクターの特性を活かしながら徒党(パーティ)内での戦闘、さらには他の徒党と組んでの戦術的連携を行うことができる。また、敵との直接的な戦いだけではなく、投石車のような巨大兵器を使用した戦闘など様々な戦法を用いることができるほか、、資材を運ぶ補給役や、砦や兵器の建設役として活躍するなど、役割も多種多様な選択が可能。プレイヤー達の戦闘結果により、ゲーム世界での魏・呉・蜀各勢力の優位が変動、最終的に自勢力による中原の制覇を目指していく。
