Kenny Kirkland唯一のリーダー作にして，大傑作
98年に惜しくも43歳で世を去ったKenny KirklandがGRPレーベル（それにしてもなんでフュージョン専門と思われたGRPなのかは今もって謎だが...）に残した唯一の単独リーダー作である。Kirklandはそのシャープなフレージングや新主流派からStingの伴奏まで何でもこなすオールラウンドなプレイ・スタイルから多数のレコーディングを残しているが，リーダー作は本作と，Jeff Watts，Charles Fambroughとの"Thunder and Rainbows"（現在はJeff Wattsのリーダー作"Megawatts"として流通)しかない。ある意味で"Musicians' Musician"の代表のようなプレイヤーと言ってもよいだろう。本作でのKirklandは，初リーダー作という気負いを感じさせることなく，新主流派的演奏とラテン・タッチをうまく交えつつ，自身の多才さを取りこんで完璧な出来に仕上げているのは立派である。ピアノのラインに，適切にシンセサイザーを絡めるのがKirkland流とも言えようが，こうした適切なサウンド･プロダクション振りも素晴らしい。ジャズ･ファンからすれば，冒頭の"Mr.JC"から一気に興奮の頂点へいざなわれてしまうが，全編を通じて素晴らしい演奏の連続である。より多くのリスナーに聴いてもらいたい90年代初頭の大傑作である。

故ケニー・カークランドの満を持してのデビュー盤となったアルバム。盟友ブランフォードをはじめ多くのゲストが参加しており、多様性に満ちている反面若干散漫な感も否めない。それはアコースティックピアノだけでなく、シンセを多用している所為でもあるだろう。4ビートからフュージョン、ロックまで高レベルでこなすバーサイタルなミュージシャンだから、このようなアルバム構成となったのも致し方ないが、もう少しケニーのピアノにスポットを当ててほしかった気もする。バド・パウエル、モンクのビバップチューンのラテンアレンジ(なかなか気が利いてて面白い)やショーター、オーネットコールマンのほかケニーのオリジナル曲が取り上げられているが、いづれも佳曲でアレンジも練られている。中でもワルツタイムの「Chance」はケニーのオリジナル曲の中でも随一の名曲といっていいのでは。ケニー独特の陰のあるハーモニーが美しい。このアルバム中、唯一純然たるピアノトリオ編成で演奏されるこの曲があまりによいので、もっとピアノトリオでケニーを聴きたかったという思いが残る。だが全体としてレベルの高い仕上がりのアルバムといえるだろう。
