オレンジ・ジュースがポリドールよりメジャー・デビューを果たしてから、2002年発表作“Doctor Syntax”までの時期の作品からの、エドウィン・コリンズのベスト盤である。契約上の問題だろう、エレヴェイションに残した作品からは曲が収録されていないが、それ以外に残したオレンジ・ジュースおよびソロのアルバムからは、必ず１曲以上の曲が収められている。選曲はおよそ妥当だろうが、この手のベスト盤だと「あの曲はどうして入ってないのよ」という意見が頻繁に出てくることだろう。自分としては、こういうベスト盤にこそオレンジ・ジュースの“Two Hearts Together”を入れてほしかったよな、と思ってしまうのだが。何かこの曲に遺恨でもあるのだろうか。

曲は年代順にではなく、バラバラの並びとなっているのだが、この作品を通して聴いてみて感じるのは、オレンジ・ジュース時代からソロ最新作まで共通している、骨太な黒さである。「爽やか系のポップ・バンド」みたいなイメージがオレンジ・ジュースについてしまったせいか、音楽性が誤解されて受け取られていることが多そうなのだが、よく聴くと（ガシャガシャしたギターの音に隠れてはいるが）、ベースやドラムズの重心の低さを強く打ち出した音作りは、ソロ時代の現在まで基本的に変わりがない。歌声もますます水木一郎に似てきたが、歌唱法からも、アメリカのソウル／Ｒ＆Ｂ方面からの影響が非常に強いことが、聴くとわかる。近年はアブストラクトな音作りも手中に収め、“Johnny Teardrop”などは非常に面白い仕上がりとなっている。やはり彼も、アメリカの音楽に憧れ、のめり込んできた人間のひとり。それを感じながら聴くと、異なった面が見えてまた面白い。
